Ascendant by Albatross Overdrive heavy rocker

Ascendant by Albatross Overdrive
Ascendant by Albatross Overdrive
If your band compares itself to Fu Manchu, Cluth, Nebula, and Thin Lizzy then it better deliver some hard ass rock & roll with killer vocals. Which exactly what the hard rock vets in ALBATROSS OVERDRIVE deliver on "Ascendant" with seven tracks that rip and roar with chugging guitar riffs with the singing to hammer the music home. Listen to the Bandcamp stream of Ascendant by Albatross Overdrive:

There's nothing but high octane riffage on this album. Every song delivers power guitar work, a rhythm section that won't let up, and strong vocals. The hard rock American sound is backed by the lyrics which sing to the struggles and corruption we confront everyday. These lyrics are a lot more involved than you typically find on a hard rocker.

Albatross Overdrive formed in 2004 in So Cal with members:
  • Art Campos-  Vocals
  • Rodney Peralta-  Drums
  • Derek W. Phillips-  Guitar
  • Andrew Luddy-   Guitar
  • Mark Abshire-   Bass
From the band:
We are an extremely attractive and well polished band with high levels of formal music training. Our ears are honed to that of a canine and possess the animal magnetism of a lion...A roaring lion with a large coarse mane, we captivate our audiences like a black demon cobra...I can't keep a straight face writing this....
Albatross Overdrive fans will be happy to know that the band is 8 songs deep into the next Full Length record which they hope to start recording early 2020.

Opus Alpha by Z.O.E Zarathustra On Extasy instrumental stoner post-rock

Opus Alpha by Z.O.E Zarathustra On Extasy
Opus Alpha by Z.O.E Zarathustra On Extasy
"Opus Alpha" is the debut album from Italian post-rockers Z.O.E Zarathustra On Extasy with four instrumental tracks that any spaced-out stoner rock fan will enjoy. There's plenty of desert guitar work and stoner riffs, with atmospherics and strings add to the effect of taking a trip through space. Have a listen to the Bandcamp stream of Opus Alpha by Z.O.E Zarathustra On Extasy:

What I enjoy most about this album is that it plays with a tremendous balance and flow. Just hit PLAY and let "Opus Alpha" tantalize your ears for half an hour.

CROW CRASH RADIO new album "ghostwaves" is killer stoner psych

I have enjoyed the instrumental psychedelic trio CROW CRASH RADIO for a while now, ever since they put a track on my PSYCHEDELIC CIRCUS compilation on Bandcamp earlier this year. This band includes one member playing theremin which is not only a rarity in any band, but is really the instrument that sounds more "psychedelic" to me than any other. It creates a haunting synth-like sound created without any physical contact from its player, and Crow Crash Radio uses it to such great effect that I am always glad to hear from the band when they have new music. Listen to the stream of Crow Crash Radio's "ghostwaves" on Bandcamp:

Crow Crash Radio gets a little heavier with this album, and "The Profane Twin" is a flat-out great stoner tune. Each song seems to give the focus over to one of the instruments, which gives each song a very unique sound compared to the others. The last track "It'll All Wash Away" is much closer to drone with long sections given over to the drums while the theremin and guitar work to create a drawn-out intoxicating hum. "ghostwaves" indeed!

Crow Crash Radio is out of Oakland CA and its members are:
  • Brian Strang: guitar
  • Andrew Joron: theremin
  • Mark Pino: drums
From the band:
Crow Crash Radio pilots a flying saucer deep into the unconscious of American roots music, producing an ambience that is both dreamy and driving: a form of retro-futurist instrumental rock. Crow Crash Radio is both retro and futurist. Theremin-based, this instrumental trio play Cosmic American Music, filled with the shadows of American gospel, blues and the soulful drones of the Near East mysticism. The sound is both quiet and meditative but also driving and hypnotic, gently carrying their audiences into the mystery at the heart of universal musical roots.

IRON RIDER is Wondering If You're In Hell By Now debut stoner doom blues EP

IRON RIDER is Wondering If You're In Hell By Now debut stoner doom blues EP
IRON RIDER is Wondering If You're In Hell By Now debut stoner doom blues EP
IRON RIDER is a doom blues outfit from Brooklyn with a debut EP out this summer. It can be a little tricky for some bands to get into the bluesier side of things without going all the way and ending up as a heavy Southern rocker band, but Iron Rider digs into the blues riffs while keeping things very doom. The songs are heavy, some are a little faster than others, and overall the EP has a great flow to it. Some of the songs have lyrics with vocals straight from Hell, and some are instrumental. I dig this sound and will be excited to hear when there is a full album from Iron Rider. Stream the debut EP from IRON RIDER "Wondering If You're In Hell By Now" for free from Bandcamp:

"Drifter" really gets into the rocking bluesy side of the band's sound, while the following track "An Old Low" gets into the slower side of the blues. Really great guitar work, too. "Bonfire" has a really heavy sound and is way more epic than it's short time would suggest. "Beg" uses the vocal effects to perfect use before another killer guitar solo kicks in. Man, this is a really good set of tracks!

Iron Rider is:

  • Mark Grillo - Guitar and Vocals
  • Michael Livathinopoulos - Drums
  • Julian Agneta - Bass Guitar and Keyboard
From the band:
An old fashioned trashy bluesy doom band from New York.
Iron Rider is a three piece doom band mixing old and dirty delta blues rhythms with a touch of grunge while still being a solid tribute to the classic and timeless cult doom and psych bands of the 60's and 70's.
Needless to say, Iron Rider incorporates horror themes and personal experiences into their lyrics, artwork and music so that each album is themed, conceptual and story driven, starting with our first one Wondering If You're In Hell By Now.
Iron Rider's first show is November 9 in NYC so follow them on Bandcamp and Facebook to stay in the loop --

DIMETRODON debut "II" instrumental doom psych prog concept album

DIMETRODON debut "II"
Fuzzy digs instrumental. Fuzzy digs doom. Fuzzy digs psych. Prog and synths work, too. And dragons and goblins. So when DIMETRODON dropped their debut album "II" on me, I was into giving it a listen. This is an instrumental tour through doom and heavy riffs with plenty of side trips through psych and prog. This trio includes synths as needed to lay down the effects, and the overall result is a really good album that has a great sonic flow to it. On top of that, the band says the songs make for a concept album about the battle of good and evil on the deserts of Mars. Have a listen to "II" from Dimetrodon:

If you are unfamiliar with concept albums (if so, immediately go check out CROW AND POE) they can run the gamut from the very specific (a story with lyrics) to the very loose (music to set the mood of an idea). "II" falls into the latter category. The song titles and the album notes are your only indications the tale takes place on the deserts of Mars and what action occurs there. But there is a flow to the album which lends itself to the theme, and anyway the music is really good, so let your imagination go where it will.

From the band:
“II” is an instrumental sci-fi barbarian concept album; sort of an escapist good vs evil story told through the lens of mid-70s proto-metal and flowery prog, with some krautrock, giallo film music, and atonal electronic influences thrown in for extra flavor.
Dimetrodon is:

  • Bass - Jim Lecheler
  • Synth and guitar - Ian McKinney
  • Drums - Rene Moncivais

DEMONIC SUNSET from DEEP VALLEY BLUES heavy rocker from Italy

DEMONIC SUNSET from DEEP VALLEY BLUES
DEMONIC SUNSET from DEEP VALLEY BLUES
It's Friday and there's no better way to enjoy the weekend than with some friends, some booze, and some heavy ass rock! You have to supply the friends and beer, but DEEP VALLEY BLUES brings the stoner rock to the party with their debut album DEMONIC SUNSET. This album rips from start to finish, its got killer guitar solos, and the vocals are as rough and nasty as the music. Check out DEMONIC SUNSET:

What ya got on this debut album is 8 tracks of heavy rock with the vocals to match, with some standout guitar work going on. Don't let the pun-ful song titles throw you off. These songs are serious rockers, and in fact "Lust Vegas" is a real slow heavy instrumental burner with (another) killer guitar solo.

Standout songs: Lust Vegas, Tired to Beg For, Empire, Demonic Sunset

Deep Valley Blues is:
  • Umberto Arena (Guitars and Backing Vocals)
  • Alessandro Morrone (Guitars)
  • Giando Sestito (Bass and Vocals)
  • Giorgio Faini (Drums)
From the band:
The Deep Valley Blues project was born in Catanzaro (Calabria) in 2016 from the desire of two restless musicians, Umberto Arena (ex-Bad Trip) and Giandomenico Sestito (Dripping Sin). The two, eager to break through eardrums, after several line-up changes, recruit two old acquaintances, Giorgio Faini and Alessandro Morrone, already known for their militancy in groups like Amorphead and Emily Witch. Once stability is reached and the way to go is decided, they give life to their first ep, recorded live in the studios of BLACK HORSE STUDIO, with the homonymous title "Deep Valley Blues". The sound of the band has its roots in sounds that oscillate between heavy Sludge / Stoner veins and Blues / Southern rhythms, nevertheless not limiting the desire to experiment.

** DISCOUNT CODE ** for MEGALITH LEVITATION debut album ACID DOOM RITES epic distorted acid metal

ACID DOOM RITES
ACID DOOM RITES
** DISCOUNT CODE BELOW **

ACID DOOM RITES is the debut album from Russia's MEGALITH LEVITATION. This album is WAY over an hour and starts right off with a slow, heavy, distorted riff and it just doesn't let up for the full hour and 17 minutes. The vocals fit the heavy mood perfectly, and they sound more like chants than singing. The only thing to do when the music is this fuzzed-out and heavy is to check it out:

I gotta say some more about how much I dig the vocals on here. They are nasty and evil, and are like drugged-out chants. The vocals fade in and out to give the music a dimension of other-worldliness that is downright frightening. Try listening to this album in the background while you are doing something else, and you will notice the vocals kick in when you least expect them to. The effect is really fantastic.

I don't give spoilers, but jump to 14:15 of "Eternal Trip / The 4-th Plateau" if you dig sound effects in your songs as much as I do, and right after that, a killer guitar solo begins which doesn't give up until the end of this epic 25 minute track.

The title track "Acid Doom Rites" starts off with chants and a very foreboding riff. This song puts the "occult" in the "occult metal" sound of this album.

Smouldering Embers of Pyromagic

"Smouldering Embers / Pyromagic" are the titles for the last track, and these two phrases sum up this album perfectly. When the debut album is this good, we should be excited about what is in the future for Megalith Levitation.

Band Members of Megalith Levitation:

  • KKV - Thunderbass
  • PAN - Skullhammers

From the band:
Band live rituals erase the thin line between illusion and reality, guiding the audience through parched walkways of eternity. Psychedelic sermons that take your mind on a trip to unknown recorded on a debut album of occultists from Chelyabinsk.

STONE PRIEST new album PALLOR MORTIS on Oct. 30 is concept psych

Pallor Mortis from Stone Priest
Artist: Roan Bateman
https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/RoanBatemanArt
Fuzzy's friends already know how much I dig heavy psych and psych rock (hello, THE LANCASTERS) so a few months ago when the super dude at HELMET LADY RECORDS got at me with a very early mix of the new STONE PRIEST album "Pallor Mortis" it was a real treat to preview it. Despite being an early mix, it was unmistakable that this was going to be a great album. So today when he hit me with the final album, there's no more wondering how the album turned out. UNREAL as we say in The Swamp. Have a listen to the two pre-release tracks (and check back Oct. 30 for the full album):

I'm not one to give spoilers, but I'll crib what's on the album page to say that this album was not intended to be a loose concept album about death. The band tells me that was not the intent in the beginning stages of writing and recording the songs, but tragedy struck and influenced the course of the album.

This album could have been pure instrumental, and with its heavy riffs and psychedelic keyboard action it would have been an enjoyable way to spend 40 minutes. But with the vocals ... this album is given that "extra something" which makes it stand out just that much more. The singing adds a depth to the experience while at the same time giving flight to the psychedelic riffs.

It's important to note that the rest of the tracks on this pre-release just as strong and good as the 2 pre-release tracks. Check out the full album on October 30.

STONE PRIEST is from Buffalo, New York and is:
Harold Pollinger - Keys, Vox
Shea Rayhn - Drums, Vox
Christopher Delmont - Guitar, B/U Vox
Larry Gartley - Bass

PSYCHIC LEMON new album FREAK MAMMAL drops Nov. 8

PSYCHIC LEMON new album FREAK MAMMAL drops Nov. 8
PSYCHIC LEMON new album FREAK MAMMAL drops Nov. 8
I have loved the upbeat edgy instrumental psych sound of PSYCHIC LEMON for a while now, so when they sent me their upcoming album FREAK MAMMAL there was no doubt I was going to dig it. But even with high expectations, this album blows me away. You know how it is -- that thrill you feel when you realize a killer band has taken their sound up a few notches. Check out the lead single "White Light" available now:

(You can also download the single from Bandcamp on the Psychic Lemon site).

Ya can't miss the high energy Krautrock and prog flavors these guys bring to their music. "Krautfunk" as they call it.

How is the rest of the album that lands on 8 November? Just as killer. "Dark Matter" is longer at 10 minutes and begins, well, darker (and slower). A very cool slow burn leads up to the guitar start dropping the distortion, the keys kick in, and we're off.  "Seeds of Tranquility" is the longest song (over 13 minutes) which delivers enough music on its own that it could be the EP for another band, and is the most spaced-out song on the album. "Afrotropic Bomb" which is aptly named, it's very groovy and sets off an explosion. It blends so nicely into "Free Electron Collective" that I had to check my player to see I was into the next track. And finally, the lead single "White Light" anchors the album to finish things off in grand style.

FREAK MAMMAL is 47 minutes of pure pumped-up psychedelic power. Get on it! Follow Psychic Lemon on Bandcamp to get the word when the album drops on November 8, and check out their other social links below.

Psychic Lemon is out of the UK and its members are:
  • Andy Briston: Guitar, synths
  • Andy Hibberd: Bass
  • Martin Law: Drums
From the band:
  • FFO: Hawkwind, Goat, Amon Düül II
  • LP 500 copies (300 on freaky green and black vinyl, 200 on transparent green vinyl)
  • Label: Drone Rock Records

"3 3 3" by 3 WHEELER BAND is a heavy rocker from Mexico

"3 3 3" by 3 WHEELER BAND
"3 3 3" by 3 WHEELER BAND
This is turning out to be a great week for music from bands from Mexico. Yesterday was the the new EP from FALSO CORDERO and today is the EP from this summer by 3 WHEELER BAND. "3 3 3" is three tracks of flat-out heavy rock with the tough vocals you know will punch the sound out in any club. Listening to this EP makes you want to see this guys at their live show. They have captured the raw energy from their shows on these studio tracks and you can hear it in the songs. Check out "3 3 3" from 3 Wheeler Band:

3 Wheeler Band plays this Saturday along with THE DARK SILENCE OF DEATH (another killer band) in Monterrey.

3 Wheeler Band is:
Adrian G. - Guitars and Vox
Davo C. - Bass
Jose M. - Drums

Vol. 3 is another great heavy, grungy doom album from MÃES MORRENDO

MÃES MORRENDO Vol. 3
MÃES MORRENDO Vol. 3
MÃES MORRENDO ("Mothers Dying" in Portuguese) is the mostly one-man project that has delivered no less than three albums just this year (on top of his work with DIRTY GRAVE). VOL. 3 just dropped today, and it is the same type of killer heavy, grungy doom that he delivered with the first two albums. The grunge element keeps the songs on a faster face than most doom albums, but there's no escaping the heavy sense of absolute dread and despair that oozes out of every song, especially with the haunting vocals. Check out VOL. 3 by MÃES MORRENDO:

Mães Morrendo is mostly the one-man project by Mark along with a few guest players and singers.

Mark's other project is DIRTY GRAVE and you want to check that out too.  Dirty Grave also has a new song on Brasil in Fuzz my comp with 58 bands all from Brazil.

FALSO CORDERO new EP "ALTARE"
FALSO CORDERO new EP "ALTARE"
FALSO CORDERO has a track on my 420 "Blood Moon God" comp from their debut EP, and today they're back with a 3-track EP "ALTARE" that takes their instrumental stoner doom even heavier and darker. I really dig this band so check out their new songs:

From the band:

URBAN GRAVEYARD debut EP is fuzzed-out dirty desert doom

URBAN GRAVEYARD debut EP is fuzzed-out dirty desert doom

I'm not sure where the desert is in The Netherlands, but URBAN GRAVEYARD found one for their fuzzed-out dirty desert doom debut EP. Only searing hot blowing sandstorms of fuzz on these tracks, along with rough vocals and some killer guitar solos. Toss in a couple of short instrumental tracks to boost the atmosphere and you've got a nice tidy EP that is heavy on the desert rock and stoner doom. Check out "Welcome to the Urban Graveyard" --

"21st Century Prostitute" is a fuzzed-out ripper. "Bloodmoon Rising" is slower and sludgier, and then things pick back up with "A Subtle Guide" and finish with "A58" which might be my favorite song on the EP. Very fuzzy, heavy, a little slow, and it just burns from beginning to end.

Check out the song times. We're getting an intro of spoken word & an instrumental interlude song between the longer vocal tracks. I dig it. These short tracks add atmosphere and mood and give the EP a little extra heft.

From the band:
Steaming Desertmetal / Stonerrock from the southwest polders of the Netherlands.

This debut EP really brings home the desert doom combo that I dig. Check out Urban Graveyard! and also check out their CD over on Bandcamp.

Bretus "Aion Tetra" heavy horror metal

Bretus "Aion Tetra" Italian doom metal
Bretus "Aion Tetra" Italian doom metal
BRETUS aims to deliver music fitting for a 70s horror movie, and they deliver that (and more) with heavy riffs and atmospheric effects on "Aion Tetra". This band has been around a while and puts their experience to use with a album full of heavy metal fit for any midnight ritual in a foggy graveyard. Listen to Bretus "Aion Tetra" --

"Priests of Chaos" starts slow with the effects setting the mood, and then the song drops in a killer riff and clean vocals. All the songs on the album are solid like this. "Prisoner of the Night" is flat out heavy metal. The good kind. A real ripper. "Aion Tetra" is surprisingly short for a title track. "Deep Space Voodoo" gets back to the slow and heavy. Has a real taste of symphonic doom. Real good.

"Mark of Evil" is back towards heavy metal. Again, really high energy and a good song. You'll notice the tracks are alternating between heavy metal and the more atmospheric & symphonic.

"Cosmic Crow" has a well-deserved video on YouTube -- check it out! This single really hits the core of Bretus' sound -- heavy metal with atmospherics and symphonics.

"Fields of Mars" is short but very doom and dark (great track) and "City of Frost" anchors the album with yet another killer dark track.

Overall, I really dig how heavy this album sounds, while delivering on the haunting atmospherics and effects. Need an album for Halloween? Or why not any day of the year? Look no further than Aion Tetra from Bretus.

Bretus is:
Ghenes (High/Low Guitars and Fx),
Zagarus (Vox),
Janos (Bass),
Striges (Drums)
From the band:
Doom band from Italy founded in 2000.
Their inspirations are: Old horror movies, H.P. Lovecraft, mysticism and 70's music.

Ghost Stories by Malkasian with Fuzzy J lays down the Voodoo Fuzz Blues

Ghost Stories by Malkasian with Fuzzy J
Ghost Stories by Malkasian with Fuzzy J
Hey remember that comp on Bandcamp I put out earlier this year THE HEAVY SOUTH? So you know I was excited to hear  Ghost Stories by Malkasian with Fuzzy J. Oh yea also I like the name "Fuzzy" and then one last thing -- on their Bandcamp they claim to be the blues band of Edgar Allan Poe who I kinda have a thing for (check out CROW AND POE). So pretty much I had decided to like this collection of groovy Southern blues rockers before I had heard them. And this album delivers. It is rocking, groovy, bluesy, a little heavy in places, a little dark in other places, and overall just a flat-out good album to kick back and listen to. Check out Ghost Stories by Malkasian with Fuzzy J:

ADVENT VARIC reviews FUMAROLE new single "Valley"

FUMAROLE new single "Valley"
FUMAROLE new single "Valley"

Big thanks to ADVENT VARIC for this guest review! Be sure to check out his other reviews on SLEEPING VILLAGE REVIEWS and also his blackened stoner metal on Bandcamp! Thanks, man!
This is my first dip in The Swamp writing a review. The Stoned Village seems to have caught onto my games, and someone got to this review before I had the chance.

Fumarole is a band hailing from Down Undah, and they are absolutely terrified of my threats. That's Australia for all who are unaware of ol' Crocodile Dundee, Fuzzy's second cousin. "Valley" is a new single from the concept album they are recording now. We all know how much concepts tickle my fancy, it's like a sweet burning in my loins. What they don't know is The Captain also writes about the valley, and I decimate the hell out of it. Varic must be sending these dudes transmissions "The Valley will consume you Into the dark". That's right boys, black holes sure do leave you in the dark with nothing left. I think they must have translated Varic's messages improperly, do Australian's have sufficient technology for this, or are they still using stone tools and smoke signals?

The music is the tasty stoner metal we all love, and the vocals make me think that Kurt really idolizes Lemmy. You can check out Valley on bandcamp, and grab one of their merch packs for 35$ AUD (that's about 25$ USD).
