Heavy rock MOLTEN HIGH delivers "Bullfrog" for your next party


Fuzzy has been to Jersey. Fuzzy has partied in Jersey. Hard. MOLTEN HIGH is from Jersey. I didn't ask the band for an interview, but their debut album "Bullfrog" is the next best thing. This high-octane party soundtrack says what an interview couldn't anyway, unless the band was going to play it live. This album is pure energy from start to finish and it's here to power your next party. You supply the beer and weed and pizza, and let Molten High deliver the hard rock tunes. Fuzzy always says, an album has gotta sound good from start to finish to count as good album. And "Bullfrog" does it with its rocket-launch first couple of tracks, a slight detour to take a breather in the middle, and then brings it home with an explosive finish. These dudes know how to party and deliver your next party's soundtrack.

You'll catch some fun lyrics ready to smack down social media and modern life in general on "T.S.A." and "Shut Up" not that you'll be sober enough at your party to understand them.

There's some really great solo guitar work and top rate production throughout. This one rips! Go get Bullfrog by Molten High.

Space doom "Deities" from TORTUGA is all about Lovecraft

It's been a while since the debut album from space doom outfit TORTUGA, and the wait has been worth it. "Deities" is top-rate heavy doom psych from its instrumental introduction through to the end of its nearly one hour of chilling riffs and vocals with a Lovecraftian theme. Check out "Deities" from TORTUGA:


"Esoteric Order" stands out as my favorite song from a playlist that is nothing but killer music. It's got the super heavy riffs, clean psychedelic guitars to blast your mind into orbit, and ice-cold vocals (and a few samples) to seal the deal on this fantastic album of space doom.

The third track "For Elizard" stands out as one of the most unique vocal tracks I've heard in a long time. This song is like the soundtrack to a horror movie and I really dig it. (And as I'll explain below, these songs are related to horror movies.)

"Defective Mind Transfer" gets back to pure instrumental, and it also swings back towards the heavy psych end of things while dialing down the doom. But only a little.

Three vocal tracks complete the album, and I can't speak highly enough of this 50-minute heavy doom psych production. Great songs, samples, effects, killer vocals, and a theme. Did I forget to mention the theme? Each song is based on a deity from Lovecraftian lore (or from a novel in the case of Defective Mind Transfer) which provide not only interesting lyrics, but help to meld the entire album into a single, cohesive, and very enjoyable listening experience.

The debut stoner psych album "Hanging Gardens" from STONES OF BABYLON is an instrumental joy to the ears. This album has a blend of swirling psychedlics mixed with heavy riffs that instantly transports your mind to the desert where it can wander amongst the cactus and peyote. This album has gotten a lot of plays here in The Swamp since it was released last month. Check out "Hanging Gardens" from Stones of Babylon:


There is a wonderful sonic flow to the album. Things start off heavy with the first track, get heavier with my favorite song "Coffee Arabica" then chill out with the middle title, and wind things back up to finish off the album. I'm not sure how the band is going to top this album, but I can't wait to find out!

Doom metal DOUBLE HORSE kill "The Great Old Ones"


Oh hell yes! DOUBLE HORSE serves up the slow fuzzy doom that I dig, with layers of psychedelic guitar and vocals risen from the grave. Add some killer samples and sound effects to the mix, and the end result is an album that delivers heavy riffs from start to finish with an energy level that is off the charts. Every song on "The Great Old Ones" is top rate, and I'll single out "Seventh Seal" because of its absolutely fantastic guitar work that sails over the heavy tombstones like a psychedelic mushroom cloud. This entire album is doom psych of the very finest order.

Fuzzy loves the sticks & strings setup (check out The Swamp's DOS BRUJOS and my Bandcamp comp "Sticks & Strings vol. 1") and Fuzzy loves instrumental (my next comp is 100% instrumental stoner), AND Fuzzy loves a good concept album (I produced CROW & POE), so when LUCIUS FOX sent me their new album "Quaternary Panorama" which is all of these things wrapped up into a mind-blowing instrumental prog metal guitar & drums concept album, what else was my reaction going to be except to say, this album is EPIC!! Have a listen to "Quaternary Panorama" and then I'll break it down:


Right off, this album is non-stop energy. The drums never let up, the riffs always keep it fresh, and even a slower song like "Extinction/Rebirth" is still full of more than enough metal. That's a hallmark of sticks & strings: each instrument has to pull way more than its own weight and it really pays off with this album.

Next thing, there is an incredible flow to this album. (Excuse the pun, since the concept that ties the songs together is glacier flows and timelines.) This plays out like a rock opera, with ebbs and flows and a consistency to the riffs that ties it all together without ever getting repetitive. This album rips it up for nearly an hour without missing a beat.

So technically, when an album is instrumental, you might argue that it's not a concept album since there are no lyrics to tell the story. Fuzzy disagrees with that. The music sets the mood and tells the story with sound, and if you insist on "lyrics" then read along with the copious album notes (and you might just learn something, too). Metal for nerds? Maybe, but I'm a nerd so I dig it. A lot.

Each song is tied to a geologic era focusing on the Great Lakes, from long ago until after humanity's demise. Check out the liner notes on the album page. From the band:
Quaternary Panorama is a 20,000 year timeline of the Great Lakes region; beginning during the final advance of the Laurentide ice sheet and ending just after the extinction of the human race. It spans the formation of the Great Lakes, migration of indigenous peoples to the region, colonialism, anthropogenic climate change, mass extinction and the aftermath. It’s hyper specific to the Great Lakes region and mega nerdy, but it also gets down really hard and we are incredibly proud of it.

Psych rockers OVERDRIVE ORCHESTRA have a new album out on February 2, and it promises to be a very heavy affair based on the sound of the new single "HCBM." I like how heavy this sounds without getting into doom, and the combination of lead vocals, with backing from the whole band, are killer. Check it out:

With the addition of Shaun Sova (guitar) and Cameron Hill (percussion) in 2016, and James Blevins (synth) in 2018, Overdrive is back in the studio recording their third album to be released in 2019. The band previously released two independent EPs-- 407 (2012) and Heading East (2013). In addition to their recordings, you can catch O2 rocking out local venues in Grand Rapids, Detroit, and surrounding areas.

T'SUN is a solo instrumental grunge psych band that recently released "Lustitia" on Big Wood Records. It's nearly 30 minutes over 2 tracks that deliver a very mellow and engaging set of songs. There is a melody that ties them together in a slow pace that makes this album a great choice when you need to hear something more on the relaxing side, or in the background while you're focusing elsewhere. There's a smattering of sound effects to lend to the chill atmosphere. Take a break with "Lustitia" by T'SUN:

This Album is the audible story of  life before and after  tragedy. Michigan stoner punks SLUMLORD RADIO have dropped a 2-track blast of noise with their new single "Gonna Be A Riot" along with one of the best covers I've ever heard of one of the best Stooges songs "Now I Wanna Be Your Dog." These loud ass dudes hail from Michigan -- it's no coincidence that is also the home state of Iggy Pop. I dig how fuzzed-out this version is. Check it out:

Prog stoner metal ORC S/T lays the pedal down with bass & drums

All I really need to say about this debut album from ORC is how many times I've listened to it in the past 2 days since it was released. Over twenty times. It really is that good. Have a listen and then I'll break it down why I dig this album so much:


There is so much to like here, but in particular I have always dug a setup where the bass is the lead string instrument. (Check out my comp from last year Sticks & Strings vol. 1 for some more bass & string setups including Eats Batteries and Bardo.) It's pounding fuzz-ed out non-stop energy, and the drums have to work extra hard to make up for the low number of instruments.

Then there is the blend of progressive and stoner metal sounds. The band took it as their goal to mix these two genres together, and the result is way beyond anything you could hope for. The fuzz never stops, the heavy riffs never quit, and now you are getting an idea of why I've played this so many times in the past couple of days.

If this album was instrumental, I would still be raving about it. I would still have listened to it as many times as I did. (For example, check out last year's MOOZOONSII debut album with its instrumental stoner groove metal.)

But this album ain't instrumental. It has vocals, and does it ever! Andy Jeglic's singing piles onto the constant energy so well that it takes this album up to a new level. Andy's singing is the perfect match for this hard-driving music.

Orc says they were going for a mix of progressive and stoner metal, and Fuzzy says they found it!

I don't usually do the FFO thing but I will say this has me thinking fondly of the debut album from Montrose with its ultra fuzz, heavy riffs, and killer vocals. Yea I think it's OK to compare a band to Ronnie Montrose and Sammy Hagar without saying it's derivative in any way.

Orc is a two-piece band from Lansing, MI, that was founded after members Andy and Connor attended a Primus and Mastodon concert. The goal of the project was to seamlessly weave progressive influences into a stoner-metal outfit.

MISTER EARTHBOUND and SIBYL are releasing a split EP, Hypnotic Rhythm, on January 11th with a tape out on Deckhead Records.  The split has 2 tracks from each of these Richmond, Virginia bands which show off their bluesy rock roots and complementary vocal styles. Mister Earthbound brings a new track "Hot Foot Powder" along with a cover of "I Put a Spell on You." Sibyl brings two new tracks "Rottweiler Smile" and "Love/Violence." You'll be able to hear a pre-release of the singles on January 4 on their Bandcamp pages (links below).

DENIZEN is a fuzzed-out stoner 4-piece from southern France with a new album of heavy music that barely fits onto a vinyl. "High Winds Preacher" delivers non-stop desert stoner with more than enough groovy fuzz and heavy psych to please any fan of stoner music. Check out Denizen's "High Winds Preacher":


Fuzzy's favorite picks are "The Beast" which is slower with a nice long burn, and "Chasing the Guru" which captures the band's sound at its best. Overall this is a very solid album with fuzz on top of fuzz and killer vocals. Dig it!
