Instrumental stoner "Hemerith" EP by Praÿ

Instrumental stoner "Hemerith" EP by Praÿ

Let's keep it real -- sure, most of us really dig some great singing but there are times when you just gotta keep it instrumental. There's something about letting the instruments do the singing which hits the spot. Maybe you want to zone out without the distraction of words, or perhaps you want to focus on the music. Whatever the deal is, instrumental music is one of the highlights of the underground scene. If you're with me on this, then you will absolutely dig "Hemerith" by Praÿ. Fuzzy is a little late getting his ears onto these 2 extended stoner tracks, but it's a new year and time for new tunes. Have a listen to Praÿ and we'll chat afterwards:

Sure, it's only 2 tracks, but with nearly 25 minutes of vibes, there is a lot to dig into here. And Praÿ doesn't waste any time digging in. The heavy riffs start right off with "Faithless Goddess" and keep going through "Widow Of Light." The former is a little cleaner, and the latter is a little fuzzier, but both have a desert rock foundation which is undeniable and exceptionally good.

Each instrument in this trio (bass, guitar, drums) stands out so cleanly in the mix that I would suggest this EP to anyone who asks me, "What's this stoner music thing all about?" It's not too slow or too fuzzy, it's got catchy riffs, and each instrument gets its chance to do its thing. If you have a friend who digs heavy rock but hasn't yet caught the stoner bug, then you need to send them this album. They'll connect with the heavy bass & drums section, or the guitar solos, and feel right at home, but realize there's a lot more going on here than with your typical rock music.

Usually I like to pick out a favorite song, but with only 2 tracks (both equally good), instead I'll point out a favorite section. It's the middle of "Widow Of Light" which splits the song in half with a haunting guitar solo and more of that heavy bass & drums which I dig so much.

Praÿ hails from Lyon, France with members:

  • Guitar: Maud Gibbons
  • Bass: Jason Rols
  • Drums: Antoine Berthet-Bondet

From the band:

Our stuff is to mix stoner rock with doom, psychedelic music and space rock.

Power stoner debut HYDE S/T

Stoner metal debut HYDE S/T
Stoner metal debut HYDE S/T
Fuzzy can't get too much stoner metal out of France. Moozoonsii, Nydeaf, Pusherkid .... the tough guitars and the rough riffs. So when HYDE sent me their debut self-titled album, I was all over it. And does this ever deliver the goods. Not only with angry music that fits these awful times so well, but there's also the angst-full vocals and killer samples. (FYI, Fuzzy loves samples.) Everything about the debut effort screams in your face that HYDE is a band to be reckoned with. Dig this great album:

I gotta point out that there are enough musical ideas packed into this full album to fill out 2 or 3 albums for a lesser band. I don't mean just the variety of the riffs between the songs, but within each song there is a lot going on. Listen to "Tsunami" a few times and unpack how much is going with this song. Just really great!

Hyde describes their sound as "power stoner" and I agree with that.

There's a fantastic balance to the instruments as well. The bass stands on its own without taking over, the drums provide tons of variety without getting splashy, and the guitar sails crips and clear over them both. A great production.

Ahhhh and the samples.... "D W A G B" is my idea of a perfect song. Chugging heavy riff underneath a classic sample. (Walter's eulogy from the end of "The Big Lebowski.") "Hunter's Run" comes in a close second with its own killer sample (from "True Detective"). Hyde really digs some cool shit.

The mini review from Mrs. Cracklins:
"Well-produced but not over-produced."
Hyde delivers a great lyric video for The Barber Of Pitlochry on YouTube:

HYDE band is from Paris with the members:
  • Mister J: Bass / Vocals
  • Mister P: Drums
  • Mister S: Guitar
From the band (via Google Translate):
HYDE produces heavy and powerful rock with stoner accents, influenced by the Swedish doom / sludge scene and North American stoner-rock. This mixture of influences gives Hyde a particular style which they qualify as Power Stoner.

Stoner fuzz & heavy psych DENIZEN new album "High Winds Preacher"

Stoner fuzz DENIZEN new album "High Winds Preacher"

DENIZEN is a fuzzed-out stoner 4-piece from southern France with a new album of heavy music that barely fits onto a vinyl. "High Winds Preacher" delivers non-stop desert stoner with more than enough groovy fuzz and heavy psych to please any fan of stoner music. Check out Denizen's "High Winds Preacher":

Fuzzy's favorite picks are "The Beast" which is slower with a nice long burn, and "Chasing the Guru" which captures the band's sound at its best. Overall this is a very solid album with fuzz on top of fuzz and killer vocals. Dig it!

Denizen's "High Winds Preacher" vinyl and CD are available from Argonauta Records at this link.

FFO: The Black Angels.

Denizen is:

  • Fabien Aletto : Vocals
  • Yann Chinette : Guitars
  • Andreas Goumy : Drums
  • Colin Trognée : Bass

From the band:
Denizen is a Stoner/Heavy Rock band formed in the South of France between Montpellier and Sète. We played a lot of shows everywhere in France and shared the stage with bands like Mars Red Sky, Yawning Man, MaidaVale, Glowsun, The Re-Stoned, Steak, Black Rainbows, Lo Pan, Abrahma, Mother Engine, Doctor Doom

NYDEAF new doom stoner concept album COSMIC INFERNO with band interview

COSMIC INFERNO by Nydeaf
COSMIC INFERNO by Nydeaf
I have loved the super fuzzed doom stoner of NYDEAF since his debut EP last year when he dropped an exclusive pre-release track on my debut comp LOUD & LONELY VOL. 1. So you know I am excited about his new album, COSMIC INFERNO. Nydeaf has taken his cutting-edge sound even further this time and delivered an album that is as thematic as it is heavy.  Listen to COSMIC INFERNO:

I didn't realize until about half the way through the album, that the the samples were connected, and by the end of the album I realized they are telling the story of a space traveller on journey of cosmic proportions. And very doom, too.

The music does not let up anywhere on this album. Every track is heavy, spaced-out, and makes use of the samples to create a very unique and satisfying concept album.

Here's the video for "S5 0014 +81" --

Scroll down for my band interview with NYDEAF!

FUZZY: Where can we listen to your new album?

Basically everywhere you can find digital music !
Spotify, Amazon, youtube, Bandcamp, Deezer, and many many more!
[Fuzzy: Check out the links above!!]

FUZZY: You posted a great video for SONG NAME on YouTube (check it out here).
Can we expect more videos for the album?

Not at the moment, It takes times that I don't have for now but I'm working on it for at least two tracks!

FUZZY: I love how you use the samples, especially how they connect the songs together with a story arc. Where are they from?

This is indeed an effect to bound all the tracks together, Cosmic Inferno is a Concept Album following my first EP 'What in the Universe' which story is basically the beginning of journey through the stars, the album here introduces
another aspect, another dimension similar to hell but in the outer space where the protagonist dives into and meets a doomed underworld.
The samples come from many things, some films and a Documentary on dangers in our Universe available on youtube, I took the voice-over and add modulation to it, the films are Solomon Kane for the demons voice, and Constantine for
the hell atmospheres, and First Man for the space stuff, I also used samples from 'Beyond The Aquila Rift' episode from the Netflix show 'Love, Death and Robots' which I vividly recommand !

FUZZY: Sometimes you post your gear or new pedals on Instagram. Tell us about some of your rig that you are really into right now.
The whole rig actually, I play through an EVH 5153 50w on a 2x12 Hesu cab, it's very unusual for doom stoner, but it dooms incredibly well !
On my pedal board I have A Black ash Fuzz from EarthQuaker Devices for my dirt sound, I run it on the crunch channel of my amp with maxed gain for a crushing sound.  For modulation I have my Walrus audio sisters as I like to called them, the Arp 87 delay and Fathom reverb.

FUZZY: Tell us about your other band and projects? Any show dates to tell us about?
With Artifex we're in the middle of the recording process for our next EP, it's going incredibly well so far ! But we don't have any planned for the moment, we're focusing on the production.
Aside from Artifex, I just recently join a project for Doom/Stoner band based in Paris, we're still searching for a members
but its promising, stay tuned ! [FUZZY: Right on!!]

FUZZY: What are some other artists or bands that you are really into right now?

I listen to a lot of genres right now, not necessarily doom oriented but the firsts thing that comes to my mind is the last Shadow of Intent album 'Melancholy' a kind of melodic deathcore, really powerful ! Other than that i could list Monolord, Whitechapel, Rivers of Nihil, Erdve...

FUZZY: Thank you, Nydeaf!!

DAHUZ doom psych debut EP hits you with a dash of prog

DAHUZ doom psych debut EP
DAHUZ doom psych debut EP
What's going on in France?? Just in the last week I have heard some mind-blowing doom psych. First it was Nydeaf, then Occult Hand Order, and today it is DAHUZ. Wow, this little 3-track partly instrumental debut EP is one of the most original set of songs I have heard in a while. Dahuz effortlessly weaves doom, psych, stoner, and even a dash of post or prog (depending on your interpretation) into a sound that is rewarding and captivating. It's hard not to really focus on these songs, which isn't to say you can't also just kick back and enjoy the heavy waves of sound as they wash over you. Check out DAHUZ:

Some other goodness: a few choice samples (I absolutely love samples), and the middle track is instrumental. I love the vocals on here (they have the perfect spaced-out sound for a doom psych album) but I won't deny how much I dig instrumentals. This EP delivers the best of all -- some of each. Right on!

From the band:
Gravelly echo of heavy bass lines, infuriated riffs and ethereal melodies drawing its inspiration from the most ancient fears and beliefs of humankind. Dahuz is a stoner/doom/prog band from the south of France.
Dahuz is from southern France and its members are:
Drums: Guillaume Spinetta
Bass guitar: Alexandre Culoma
Guitar, vocals: Emmanuel Cadman

OCCULT HAND ORDER stoner psych debut EP delivers the heavy riffs

OCCULT HAND ORDER stoner doom debut EP
OCCULT HAND ORDER stoner doom debut EP
The debut stoner doom EP from France's OCCULT HAND ORDER is exactly how I like my stoner doom -- fucking heavy while delivering the riffs. These 4 tracks stay dark and heavy but have their moments where they take off across the desert of doom. Already I cannot wait for the full album! Check out OCCULT HAND ORDER:

I also dig the variety in song lengths. We all love the long songs that take you on a journey, but sometimes what you need is a short one to kick out the doomy riffs. I like the balance going on with this EP. The transition from "Stolas" to "Witches Are Burning" is exactly what I mean -- one ends and the next one decides to kick in your teeth at twice the speed. These tracks are really the perfect mix of STONER and DOOM.

From the band:
Heavy are the riffs. Dark are the thoughts.
The trio summons a dizzy psychedelism and let the fuzz buzz through the bones.
Occult Hand Order shakes the souls and the bodies with its Stoner Hard Psych.
The band shared the stage with many great artists such as Mars Red Sky, Naxatras and Maidavale.
Show on Saturday! So follow Occult Hand Order to stay in touch with the band:

MOOZOONSII debut stoner groove metal EP is INCREDIBLE

MOOZOONSII debut stoner metal EP
MOOZOONSII debut stoner metal EP
Remember earlier this year when I reviewed a fantastic stoner metal album debut out of Argentina from LOW MACHINE? Here's the link. I love that album, and so does The Swamp Krewe. It is one of the most popular albums we have listened to this year. So when the drummer from Low Machine told me about his other band in France called MOOZOONSII and their new debut self-titled EP, you know I was on it. This has so many elements of my ideal album: instrumental, stoner, metal, and it plays with a consistent killer sound from the very start to the very end. Check out MOOZOONSII:

Each song is unique, yet there is a consistency across all 7 tracks which makes this play out in such a solid way that I have not listened to this yet without playing the entire EP. It's like somehow these songs all need to be played together. The high metal content of the songs connects them together with some kind of stoner magnetic force. Even the slower sections have enough energy to power the entire album.

There's a bit of a stoner punk vibe going on here. We've got 7 tracks clocking into 25 minutes. These are not epic 15 minute slow stoner songs. Moozoonsii comes in hot, moves fast, and melts your face. Then they move onto the next song and do it all over again.

Moozoonsii calls their sound groove metal and I agree!

There's not much point to single out any of the tracks. They are all fresh, explosive, and exactly how I like my stoner groove metal. I will point out Fœtality is incredible so if you only share one track with your friends, it is a good choice.

Moozoonsii is:
Basile Chiariello (guitar)
Raphael S-Drafo (bass)
Matthieu Bellemere (drums)
From the band:
Instrumental, big & groovy riffs, fast psych parts, quick structure changes.
The drummer and guitar player are also in OZMA so check them out on Bandcamp. Also instrumental with more a heavy metal sound.

And remember to check out LOW MACHINE too! Another killer album with a more chill stoner sound compared to Moozoonsii.

Stone Rebel -- Magic Ball Stone Rebel -- Magic Ball album review by Fuzzy Cracklins of The Swamp Records
Stone Rebel -- Magic Ball
We're proud of our French heritage here in the heart of Acadiana. So it's always nice to hear from a French band. Especially when I need to calm down the swamp critters, and I can turn to the relaxing calming mellow psych tunes such as Magic Ball from the new group, Stone Rebel.
