Code Drop & Review for "Nature Heart Mother" by A.J. Kaufmann psychedelic rock

Code Drop & Review for "Nature Heart Mother" by A.J. Kaufmann psychedelic rock

Grab a code below to add the latest release from Poland's A.J. Kaufmann to your Bandcamp music collection!

Experimentation is the essence of psychedelic, and A.J. Kaufmann is the essence of experimentation! Check out the latest release from "The Strange World of A.J. Kaufmann" called "Nature Heart Mother" just released on Bandcamp.

The title is a riff on Pink Floyd's "Atom Heart Mother" but the music is all its own. "Nature Heart Mother" is its own collection of songs, improvisations and even a re-recording recorded at the Via Kosmische studio. Some of the songs are psych rockers such as "Get Ya Dig" while others are more introspective such as the title track. What ties all of the songs together is a love for & dedication to the idea that psychedelic music is all about experimentation -- trying out new sounds & vibes.

This album is definitely a "must-listen" for any fan of the modern psychedelic music scene. Check it out! Also be sure to check out "The Hermit" also by A.J. Kaufmann on The Swamp Records https://www.fuzzycracklins.com/2024/03/psych-rock-hermit-by-aj-kaufmann-of.html

VINYL PRE-ORDER for psych rock "Stoned Gypsy Wanderer" by A.J. Kaufmann

"Stoned Gypsy Wanderer" by A.J. Kaufmann
Cover art by Justin Jackley

Fans of The Swamp know how much Fuzzy digs psych rock and all things psychedelic, and The Swamp Krewe has given a warm welcome to our new band, FAIRYPORT CONVENT with their monthly dose of cutting-edge psych from Poland. Well, today I am excited to share the news about the vinyl pre-order from A.J. KAUFMANN, the man behind Fairyport Convent. "Stoned Gypsy Wanderer" is 14 songs that run the spectrum of psych rock from catchy to experimental and back again. Listen to "Stoned Gypsy Wanderer" on Bandcamp:

AJ Kaufmann has a great voice which works so well with his music, and his lyrics are pure poetry. His music really is everything you could ask for in psych rock: groovy tunes, catchy vocals, and deep lyrics.

To me, an important part of psychedelic music is the experimentation. Of course the riffs and grooves are important, but so too is the ability to try new sounds and different directions. AJ Kaufmann puts so much creative energy into this album that it could power an entire discography from a lesser band.

Fuzzy's Favorites: "Crown Of Things" with its middle-eastern flair and slow burning groove, and "Veil of Isis" with its tripped-out vocals and psych pop vibe. "Iceberg" is also not to be missed, although this album deserves to be heard from start to finish.

"Stoned Gypsy Wanderer" drops on August 2, and the vinyl is on pre-order now at https://aj-kaufmann-ramble-record.bandcamp.com/album/stoned-gypsy-wanderer

Psych rock debut EP from FAIRYPORT CONVENT

It's official -- there's a lot of great psych rock coming out of Poland these days! Readers of this blog already know Fuzzy digs JAMES BUTTON BAND, and today I'm listening to the debut EP from FAIRYPORT CONVENT. This band covers a lot of psychedelic territory, with vibes from 60s psychedelia, 70s space rock, and even venturing into the fringes of industrial and Krautrock. Listen FAIRYPORT CONVENT on Bandcamp and read Fuzzy's review after the jump:

Prog psych "Sage" by Wąż

"Instrumental psychedelic with a progressive edge" is how Fuzzy describes the debut album "Sage" by Poland's Wąż. A blend of stoner, prog metal, and ambient all tied together with a psychedelic sound. This is instrumental stoner music with a lot going on. Check out "Sage" by Wąż on Bandcamp:

The songs range from prog metal (the title track "Sage) to mellow ambient ("Solaris") and a blend of both ("Prism") yet the variety really works here. There is a flow and a cohesion to the songwriting that makes for an enjoyable trip across the various styles of music.

Fuzzy's favorite: "Prism" really gets its groove going with its 10-minute run, while "Sage" seems to capture the essence of Wąż's sound, and was a good choice for the title track. The entire album delivers a solid 47 minutes instrumental prog & psych.

Check out the CD and follow Wąż at https://wazband.bandcamp.com/album/sage

and

Later on Kuba Szyma joined Wąż on drums and the band evolved into an instrumental trio. Music of the group is a mix of progressive metal compositions, stoner rock grooves and psychedelic trip passages.
Wąż is from Poland with members:
  • Arek Kaus - guitar/synths

Psych rock "Desert Revelations" by JAMES BUTTON BAND

Psych rock "Desert Revelations" by JAMES BUTTON BAND

With a band like THE LANCASTERS in The Swamp, it ain't no secret that Fuzzy digs psych rock. So when JAMES BUTTON BAND sent me their new psych rock album, "Desert Revelations" you know I was down to dig it. As in, Fuzzy TOTALLY digs it! Every song has a catchy riff, layered vocals, and that magic blend of psychedelic and rock that only a band with a love for late 60s "Cosmic American Music" (as the band says) or music from the later Beatles albums (Fuzzy's take on James Button Band). Dig "Desert Revelations" by JAMES BUTTON BAND for yourself on Bandcamp:

Fuzzy's Favorite: OK this is a tough choice, since all 7 tracks are solid psych rock. I would say the organ and guitar work in "Good day, time" are absolute psych rock magic, and for a flat-out riffy rocker, Fuzzy's choice is "Powderhorn Blues." No wait -- "Hot Burrito #4" has that slow, bluesy sound which can sometimes be captured so well by psych rock. Or what about the boogie woogie of "Quarantine Days" ? OK, I can't really pick one favorite ... but I'm glad to play this album from start to finish, and then over again.

"Desert Revelations" by JAMES BUTTON BAND is easily one of the best psych rock albums of the year.

James Button Band is from Szczecinek, Poland with members:

  • Jakub Legan - guitar, lead vocals
  • KArolina Baworowska - bass, hammond organ, piano
  • Kamil Kondała - drums, backing vocals

From the band:

Rock'n'Roll band from Szczecinek (Poland), founded in 2012.  Their music combines Rock, Blues, Psychedelic Rock and Progressive Rock. Inspirations are late 60's/70's and a present day's vibrations.

Since 2018, they direct their music to listeners outside their country. This year, due to the lockdown, the band locked themselves in the studio and used the concert adrenaline in their studio work. The resulting album combines the inspiration of Cosmic America Music, created by artist Gram Parsons, with their own raw Rock'n'Roll.

Drone metal "Excavation" debut EP from BRONTOSAURUS

Drone metal "Excavation" debut EP from BRONTOSAURUS
Drone metal "Excavation" debut EP from BRONTOSAURUS
The Swamp has its share of drone metal (our newest band is COUNT SZAR) and ambient psych (founding brother OPIUM WARLOCK). So when I got the word about the debut album from BRONTOSAURS, I was right on it. And I was not disappointed! This is drone of the heaviest sort, and delivered with an unending barrage of unique ambient touches. This album is as fantastic as it is original, so have a listen to "Excavation" on Bandcamp --

Beyond the complete brutality of this heaviness on the first track and "Junkhead", there are some masterful flourishes to the music. The intentional skips, the drum work, the straining guitars, samples, the effects .... simply incredible stuff going on here. Despite the sheer weight of the music, there is so much variety to the music and sounds that you will simply not be able to pull your ears away from any of it. You are rewarded for catching the details as they travel past you.

Fuzzy's favorite song? Not an easy choice. I will say that the middle of "Junkhead" sent tingles up my spine, and the sheer originality of "Dinocracy" makes it stand out despite its short length. Drone purists might complain about the drift into ambient on a few of these songs, but to me, that is the appeal of this album. Ambient is the heavy half-brother of drone, and Brontosaurus is the father of them both.

I pity the demise of the dinosaurs, and I pity you if you miss out on this drone metal marvel with an ambient flair.

Brontosaurus is the drone metal project from Jan Chojnowski of The Howling Eye.

Space doom "Deities" from TORTUGA is all about Lovecraft

"Deities" by TORTUGA
Cover art by Rafał Wechterowicz
It's been a while since the debut album from space doom outfit TORTUGA, and the wait has been worth it. "Deities" is top-rate heavy doom psych from its instrumental introduction through to the end of its nearly one hour of chilling riffs and vocals with a Lovecraftian theme. Check out "Deities" from TORTUGA:

"Esoteric Order" stands out as my favorite song from a playlist that is nothing but killer music. It's got the super heavy riffs, clean psychedelic guitars to blast your mind into orbit, and ice-cold vocals (and a few samples) to seal the deal on this fantastic album of space doom.

The third track "For Elizard" stands out as one of the most unique vocal tracks I've heard in a long time. This song is like the soundtrack to a horror movie and I really dig it. (And as I'll explain below, these songs are related to horror movies.)

"Defective Mind Transfer" gets back to pure instrumental, and it also swings back towards the heavy psych end of things while dialing down the doom. But only a little.

Three vocal tracks complete the album, and I can't speak highly enough of this 50-minute heavy doom psych production. Great songs, samples, effects, killer vocals, and a theme. Did I forget to mention the theme? Each song is based on a deity from Lovecraftian lore (or from a novel in the case of Defective Mind Transfer) which provide not only interesting lyrics, but help to meld the entire album into a single, cohesive, and very enjoyable listening experience.

Be sure to buy the digital version (link below to Bandcamp) because you get artwork for each track. These are scans of Roman Zarzeczny´s linocuts.

Tortuga hails from Poland with members:
  • Drums - Marmur
  • Bass - Heszu
  • Guitars, Vocals - Bablo
  • Guitars, Synths, Vocals - Kłosu
From the band:
The album is inspired by H.P. Lovecraft stories and each song tells a story of a different Lovecraftian deity. The only exception is the song titled Defective Mind Transfer, based on Lovecraft's short novel From beyond. Below you can find a little bit of context for each song.
A CD is on the way, so follow Tortuga on Bandcamp to find out when it's released.

MOONSTONE debut stoner doom album drops on Dec. 28

MOONSTONE debut stoner doom album
MOONSTONE

MOONSTONE drops their debut stoner doom album on December 28th with 5 tracks of pounding, heavy riffs and ghostly vocals. This set of 5 songs has a chugging, relentless flow that gives this album the feel of a more experienced band. "Ash and Stone" is the pre-release single which I really dig, and if I had to pick a favorite from this solid list, it would be "Pale Void" which hits that perfect blend of heavy riffs and vocals from the dark realms. Stream MOONSTONE s/t free on Bandcamp:

Moonstone is a band I would love to see live at a show. It doesn't take much imagination to get the idea for how their show will pound your head with these heavy riffs.

Moonstone is:
  • Jan Maniewski - guitars and vocals
  • Wiktor Kozak - bass
  • Kacper Kubień - drums
From the band:
Assembled in 2017, Moonstone has stormed the stages of Kraków with their dynamic take on stoner/doom metal. Set to come out on December 28th, their self-titled debut album is an intense combination of eerie vocals and thunderous instrumentals. A surge of hypnotic guitar riffs, heavy bass, and pounding drums from start to finish, Moonstone is a riotous newcomer to the scene, one which is sure to leave you intoxicated in every sense of the word. Don’t miss the fucking trip.
Label: Galactic Smokehouse

There will be a CD too so follow Moonstone on Bandcamp for the info:

Tętno Pulsu by LASTRYKO instrumental psych + synths = KILLER

Tętno Pulsu by LASTRYKO
Tętno Pulsu by LASTRYKO
So much great instrumental psych is landing in The Swamp lately! Just a few days ago we got to hear BILLY TSOUNIS and today it is Poland's LASTRYKO. The album is called "Tętno Pulsu" and has over 45 minutes of killer instrumental psychedelic music with synths added into the mix, and a touch of Krautrock to kick up the energy level. This band combines repetition with variation so keep the songs moving upward and into space. Have a listen to Tętno Pulsu by LASTRYKO:

The album starts off right with nearly ten minutes of "Jeden" which is spacey but not to fast or heavy. "Just right."

"Dwa" really gets moving and has some great solo guitar work. The bass line is heavy and fast, and this might be my favorite track on an album that has only great songs.

"Trzy" dials back the speed and delivers the most psychedelic song, with a couple more shorter songs before the album ends with "Sześć" getting back to the longer tracks. There is a not a weak or mediocre song on this album, and if you are a fan of instrumental psych then you will totally dig Tętno Pulsu by LASTRYKO.

Lastryko is:
Wojciech Lacki - bass
Jacek Rezner - drums
Artur Bieszke - guitar
Maciej Szkudlarek - synthesizers

HEROD by o.d.r.a Blues + doom + sludge

HEROD by o.d.r.a
HEROD by o.d.r.a
Blues + doom + sludge is a combination of tags that should have you running to hit that PLAY button. Heavy doom with a rough edge and bluesy riffs is what you get on the new album HEROD from Poland's o.d.r.a. Check it out:

Track 5 "Chuj To Kojo" might be the most bluesy track on the album, so jump there if you want to hear where these guys lay down the doom with blues riffs.

There is some really incredible guitar work going on here. "Derby Heroda" is probably my favorite song on the album, and it includes a totally wild guitar solo.

The vocals are sludge so either that's your thing or it isn't. I dig them and they fit the music perfectly. There's a pain and anguish and that's where the music is at so the singing is a good fit. And the singing is in Polish which sounds great to me with this music. There's a lo-fi fuzzed-out effect to the singing that adds even more strain and edginess.

I'm a huge fan of albums which have a sonic flow from start to finish, and HEROD is all over that. Some of the tracks even blend right into each other with only a cut for the track times. This album takes you on an aural journey through various levels of darkness and the album is like a book with the chapters all in the right order. I had to keep checking the album page to see that I was now listening to a new song.

o.d.r.a. is from Wrocław, Poland. Members are:
Hudy Byk - vocal
Kobi - guitar
Świta - bass
Ziółko - drums

Dying Sun Remaster by The Howling Eye is a worthy remaster

Few things in music get my attention like the words REMASTER. If a band thinks enough of their music to go back and give it some more love and attention, then I figure I am in for a special treat. And a special treat is exactly what THE HOWLING EYE have delivered with DYING SUN REMASTER (2019). It's 48 minutes minutes of heavy stoner doom metal, mostly instrumental, and pretty much just epic overall.

It's been a while since I listened to the original DYING SUN (2017) and also I wanted to compare it with the new remaster, and ..... oh hell yes! The entire sound is heavier and fuller. I'm on my good headphones so imagine how this is going to sound when I get it going on the big ancient speakers at Happy Hour tonight. I'm not sure if The Howling Eye has any plans for a CD or vinyl but I would pick up both of those if they came out. This remaster deserves nothing less.

And there's more! Because the remaster includes a new track THE HOWLING CAVES that was not on the original album.

And there's EVEN more because they also recorded different versions of the songs! These guys have been busy. Here is DYING SUN REDUX:

I asked the band about this pair of new records based on the original Dying Sun. Here is what The Howling Eye had to say about REDUX:
The story begins in Feb 2018. The nights were long and cold as fuck and we were recording Sonorous at Kongo Studio in a small town near Warsaw. We used to record our parts for most of the day, having only a gas cooker to make our food and a small, jet-engine-like gas heater to get us warm, so in the end of the day we were all dead tired. Usually we would just rest, jam or both, but on one particular night Jacek (our sound engineer) left for Warsaw to see GOLD, a great Dutch band. We got pretty high and I remembered the idea to re-record our first EP, but someone proposed to make it different. I had a country Texas-ranger-like version of Dying Sun in my mind for a while back then. Even earlier we had noticed that the riff from 'Junkhead' sounds kinda similar to 'To, Co Czujesz, To, Co Wiesz', a Polish reggae/dub classic. Thus we decided to re-record the EP, but each song was to be in a different style. We didn't know what to do with 'Dwa Złote', though, so I guess we just wanted to play it faster and it turned out to be a drum and bass song. We only did one take of everything so it's pretty floppy at some places, but I believe it turned out good.
And about REMASTER:
Hubert proposed the remaster last Autumn. Our first EP was recorded live at Hubert's basement and pre-mixed (all the mics were recorded into one 'sum' track), so basically everything better than that would be an improvement. We decided that there is no point in fooling around, it sounded cheap, dark and rough, so we wanted even more of it. We basically added more bass where we could and compressed the shit out of everything to achieve this roaring kind of sound. We came up with lyrics to 'Dying Sun', so Hubert recorded them and I overdubbed my solos. Hubert also experimented with stacking layers, reverb and delays, so I hope it's as filthy and swampy as it should be. We also came up with this concept of a dualistic EP, which is reflected in the covers. One side of it is happy and chilly, and the other is pure doom.
I first reviewed The Howling Eye back in 2018 with SONOROUS and you should check that out, too. It's also very good.

Sonorous by The Howling Eye stoner metal album
I listened to Sonorous when it came out, and with so many great albums on Bandcamp, it stayed on my wishlist for a while and I said to myself, "Yea I need to get back to this one." So I was glad today when my fuzzy phone buzzed as I was relaxing out on the dock throwing scraps to the gators.  It was a message from The Howling Eye to give their latest album the Cracklins treatment. 4 Years After by Lady Electric
I am getting my ass kicked at work this week but I have to make time to review one of my favorite albums of the year. (In case you are wondering how Mr. Cracklins earns his living, let's just say that it is legal and also that it kicked my ass this week.) Free streaming after the jump, and keep reading for the Fuzzy Cracklins review of the instrumental stoner album 4 Years After by Lady Electric.....
