Instrumental stoner "Planet Terror" by Black Sky Giant

Instrumental stoner "Planet Terror" by Black Sky Giant

If you like your stoner music to land more on the desert side of things, and instrumental, with a bit of psychedelic flair, then BLACK SKY GIANT has just the album for you. "Planet Terror" is a collection of 7 songs with slow, fuzzy riffs with clean guitar solos that sound like they were recorded at the bottom of Death Valley. Add in some choice samples, with a dash of synths, and you have an album which will keep you mesmerized all the way through. Listen to "Planet Terror" on Bandcamp:

It's probably no surprise that Black Sky Giant is from Argentina. This is definitely an album to recommend highly.

Fuzzy's Favorite: "Perpetual waves to come" but don't miss "The phantom gun" and "Ulameth (endbringer)" with their killer use of samples.

Acid fuzz SONIC DEMON "Vendetta"

Acid fuzz SONIC DEMON "Vendetta"

Fuzzy's ears are still reeling from SONIC DEMON's twin sonic attacks in late 2020, and without mercy the band has just detonated another bomb of psychedelic acid doom with "Vendetta." This time the agent of destruction is a full album, clocking in at 40 minutes with 8 songs. The band delivers a blend of fuzzy doom metal and rough vocals which reminds me of PROFESSOR ELECTRIC in the best possible way.

Drenched in acidic fuzz with catchy riffs and some killer clean guitar solos, Sonic Demon kicks off 2021 with a fantastic album. I wonder if my ears will get a chance to recover before Sonic Demon drops their next bomb?

Fuzzy's Favorite: "Revenge" has all of the band's caustic sound with a groovy guitar solo, but really, if you dig one song on this album, you're going to dig them all. "Cosmic Eyes" stands out, too, with its slow build-up and stand-out length.

Solo shoegaze CAPTAIN SHRUGS "Boredom City" is fantastic

Fuzzy loves solo artists. My first comp was Loud & Lonely vol. 1. The Swamp's Crow Ballard and Opium Warlock are both solo bands. Solo friends of The Swamp are too many to list here, but be sure to check out Crushing Yellow Sun, Stonehag, Mäes Morrendo, Tree of Riffs / Blake Evans, Jerky Dirt, Count Szar .... you get the idea.

So when CAPTAIN SHRUGS sent me his latest project to check out, I was pretty excited. And The Captain did not let me down! "Boredom City" mixes fuzzy psychedelic riffs with shoegaze effects and haunting vocals in a way that is energizing and relaxing at the same time. These songs are like riding a wave of sound, where you get lifted up but then sink back down, only to be lifted again by the next wave. Stream "Boredom City" on Bandcamp:

Another thing that really stands out is the drumming. Many solo artists use a drum machine or software (nothing wrong with that!) but it leaves the sound a little too perfect, and well, ... machine-like. The drumming on here is authentic, energetic, creative, and really excellent. A great foundation and complement to the riffs.

Captain Shrugs is working on his next album, which you can preview on Bandcamp right here.

Captain Shrugs band is Nicola Serafini from Ravenna, Italy.

Grunge psych "Lustitia" by T'SUN on Big Wood Records

"Lustitia" by T'SUN on Big Wood Records
"Lustitia" by T'SUN on Big Wood Records
T'SUN is a solo instrumental grunge psych band that recently released "Lustitia" on Big Wood Records. It's nearly 30 minutes over 2 tracks that deliver a very mellow and engaging set of songs. There is a melody that ties them together in a slow pace that makes this album a great choice when you need to hear something more on the relaxing side, or in the background while you're focusing elsewhere. There's a smattering of sound effects to lend to the chill atmosphere. Take a break with "Lustitia" by T'SUN:

Lustitia was written, produced, recorded by Brandon Welch. From the band:
This Album is the audible story of  life before and after  tragedy. Part1 touching on the weeks and months of optimism  and tranquility that life can offer you moments before it decides to challenge you. Part2 opening with a loud crash followed by a new level of emotion. Not as upbeat and social. Part2 carries a moody less hopeful, darker undertone than Part1 initially presents. During the recovery process of silence we find find a new sound to push us forward. We need to find patience and an even darker moment of silence before the music finds us once again. This album finish with hope truth and the feeling of wanting more......
BIG WOOD RECORDS is a new label in the PNW focusing on unsigned local bands. THE MOTHERCROW blues psych MAGARA from Spain with killer vocals

MAGARA by THE MOTHERCROW
MAGARA by THE MOTHERCROW
Generous slabs of psychedelic blues and rich soulful vocals are on the menu of "Magara" the debut album Barcelona's THE MOTHERCROW. The vocals get even better with a mix of Basque and English lyrics, and the music gets even more psychedelic with keys, flute and sitar.

The Mothercrow deliver a full album of psychedelic blues on "Magara" with some tracks landing on the heavy rock side of things, and others like "Forevermore" showing us exactly how the blues and psychedelic music make for a great match. And to me, psychedelic music should embrace instruments beyond the guitars, bass, and drums to include sounds to take you on a sonic journey, so when I hear flutes and sitar on these songs (and especially in the title track) it is a wonderful thing to hear! But don't worry, there is plenty of heavy rock and soaring guitar solos.

If you dig the blues psych (and especially the vocals) of Spain's The Mothercrow, be sure to check out Italy's AyahuascA and Brazil's Spiral Guru.

From the band:
The Mothercrow is a rock band influenced by the '60 -'70 rock, based in Barcelona. The influences that define the sound of the group goes from blues and psychedelia to early 70's heaviest rock.
The Mothercrow is from Barcelona with the members:
··Karen Asensio: Vocals··
··Claudia González: Bass··
··Pep Carabante: Drums··
··Max Eriksson: Guitar··

CROW CRASH RADIO new album "ghostwaves" is killer stoner psych

I have enjoyed the instrumental psychedelic trio CROW CRASH RADIO for a while now, ever since they put a track on my PSYCHEDELIC CIRCUS compilation on Bandcamp earlier this year. This band includes one member playing theremin which is not only a rarity in any band, but is really the instrument that sounds more "psychedelic" to me than any other. It creates a haunting synth-like sound created without any physical contact from its player, and Crow Crash Radio uses it to such great effect that I am always glad to hear from the band when they have new music. Listen to the stream of Crow Crash Radio's "ghostwaves" on Bandcamp:

Crow Crash Radio gets a little heavier with this album, and "The Profane Twin" is a flat-out great stoner tune. Each song seems to give the focus over to one of the instruments, which gives each song a very unique sound compared to the others. The last track "It'll All Wash Away" is much closer to drone with long sections given over to the drums while the theremin and guitar work to create a drawn-out intoxicating hum. "ghostwaves" indeed!

Crow Crash Radio is out of Oakland CA and its members are:
  • Brian Strang: guitar
  • Andrew Joron: theremin
  • Mark Pino: drums
From the band:
Crow Crash Radio pilots a flying saucer deep into the unconscious of American roots music, producing an ambience that is both dreamy and driving: a form of retro-futurist instrumental rock. Crow Crash Radio is both retro and futurist. Theremin-based, this instrumental trio play Cosmic American Music, filled with the shadows of American gospel, blues and the soulful drones of the Near East mysticism. The sound is both quiet and meditative but also driving and hypnotic, gently carrying their audiences into the mystery at the heart of universal musical roots.

CREATURES OF HABIT is the new thematic EP from King Cig -- drops August 30

King Cig - Creatures of Habit
King Cig - Creatures of Habit
King Cig is the stoner doom punk 4-piece from Melbourne (a city that needs no introduction for punks) that you'll remember had a song "Anxiety Machine" on my Opium Warlock's Dungeon of Darkness comp a while back. Now they are ready to unleash a 5-track EP with the same fuzzy doom punk sound and this time it's got a monstrous theme to tie it all together. Take a listen to the lead single, "Swamp Thing":

The EP drops on August 30 with 5 tracks. It opens with "The Creature Below" a short instrumental that sets the heavy doom mood perfectly for the rest of the EP. Then things get downright demonic with "Alpine Terror" with the punk vocals and dark lyrics, and some great psychedelic guitar work.

"Tomb Dweller" is the middle track. More of the heavy but fast-moving doom, and the vocals kick it up with dueling voices to drive home the satanic lyrics.

"Swamp Thing" is a good example where the guitar solo really explodes and this is on a couple of the other songs too.

"Thundertree" wraps it up with a bang, and this might be my favorite song. Pretty epic for a 4 minute song. You are in for a treat on August 30.

There is so much going on here that I was surprised when I checked the time and found the whole thing wraps up in 20 minutes. There's enough sonic mayhem on this to fill a full-sized album. Maybe two.

Besides the ghoulish theme, another thing that ties the songs together is the way they lead from one song into the next.

Every track on here is short and to the point. No slackers in this lineup. Fuzzy heavy stoner doom with punk vocals from start to finish. Be sure to follow King Cig so you can find out when CREATURES OF HABIT drops on August 30 -- links below.

King Cig in their own words:
Stoner/Doom/Punks from Melbourne. New EP Creatures of Habits’ has an over arching theme is of monsters, ghouls and creatures of the night. With tracks like “Swamp Thing” and “Tomb Dweller” it may seem like a monster manual on the surface but may very well be a metaphor for demons much more sinister.

On My Way by The Count is pure psychedelic bliss -- music review and band interview by Fuzzy Cracklins

On My Way by The Count
On My Way by The Count

You guys know that me and Dr. Greenthumb love all kinds of psychedelic music, after all we did a comp together on Bandcamp a few months ago with over three hours of great music. Jams, improvised, doom psych, stoner psych, live, and even more. A sampler of everything that is going on today in the psychedelic music scene. So the point is, I dig psychedelic music!

So you can imagine when I got the word from my friends in Sleeping Child (check out my review here) that I went to go check out the new single from The Count so I could take a listen. Have a listen for yourself to The Count's new single, On My Way:

This is exactly what psychedelic means to anyone when you say, It's a psychedelic song. Right? I suppose now that we have doom psych and stoner psych and all that, I have to call On My Way something, so maybe I should call it "traditional" psychedelic. If this song came out in 1968 you would say, "Oh yea this is a groovy song." And it is groovy! The most important thing about music from that era was, Did it make you feel good or not? And this song makes you feel good. No doubt about it.

So let's meet The Count! He kindly took the time to answer a few questions:

FUZZY CRACKLINS: Tell us a little about yourself?
I’m 27 years old, based in Chicago. The Count is my solo project, and I play all the instruments that you hear in my songs. That includes recording them in my studio as well as mixing them. The project idea is many years old, but it only took off last year with my very first release which was The Count & His Majestic Band EP.

FUZZY CRACKLINS: Do you always use the full name of the band?
I’ve actually changed the name of the project to just “The Count” so that’s why there is a difference in title from my EP to my single. I’m still keeping the “Majestic Band” part for my backing band, whenever I play live.
FUZZY CRACKLINS: I'm sure your fans in Chicago will be glad to hear about you getting a band together! Tell us about it.
I put a backing band together a couple months ago, and unfortunately no live shows at the moment, but there will be very soon! [Fuzzy says to check out The Count's social links below to keep track of his upcoming shows!]
FUZZY CRACKLINS: What kind of music inspires your music?
The music that inspires me the most is anything that is full and lush sounding, like the “wall of sound” kind of deal. With that being said I love Beach Boys – Pet Sounds and many 60’s and 70’s psych bands. Brian Jonestown Massacre is also a big influence for me as well as plenty of other 80’s and 90’s stuff like The Jesus and Mary Chain, Spiritualized, Oasis, The Verve. Some more modern bands like Chatham Rise and Elephant Stone, and plenty more. [Fuzzy says maybe I should invite The Count to help me with my next psychedelic comp, right??]
FUZZY CRACKLINS: What's coming up for The Count?
I have more singles to release in the near future, kind of exploring and trying out different styles, but nothing that strays away too much from my sound.
FUZZY CRACKLINS: Good to hear! I'm looking forward to your next songs. Thank you for taking the time, Count!

The cool gators already know that it's all about the instrumental music around here. But let us not forget the Golden Rule:

"Fuzzy Cracklins will listen to anything once."

So I'm glad that Flavio from OOPArt hit me up to give their debut EP a listen. Their music is definitely my style (a blend of heavy blues, stoner, psych, hard rock) and while I would normally pass on tracks with vocals, I have to say these guys have a unique singing style & sound that goes very well with their music.
