Weedcore "Blunderblues" from Halfaya

Weedcore "Blunderblues" from Halfaya
Cover by Fundie Biela

Fuzzy goes all the way back with HALFAYA to their 2019 debut, and I'm excited to say the band just released their latest album, "Blunderblues" which brings 8 new songs from Argentina to blast your ears with fuzz. Halfaya's sound is "energetic" if I'm being polite, and "apocalyptic" if I'm being honest. Halfaya brings an original take on desert rock with their non-stop fuzz and a foundation of blues, and together with the Spanish vocals, "Blunderblues" is non-stop energy from start to finish. Listen to Halfaya "Blunderblues" on Bandcamp:

Things start off with a sense of calm in "TxOxLxA" but any idea that Halfaya is your typical desert rock band is quickly destroyed as the song explodes into their signature weedcore sound. "El Viaje" was the lead single, and is surely the song that you would recommend to a new fan as it captures the essence of the band's sound.

The title track "Blunderblues" is a stand-out, so it's no wonder it's the title track. It's a little slower than the rest of the songs, and it brings with it a sense of somberness or dread that really makes it stand out.

"Fuego" starts off slow like the first track, but you already know it will be blasting your ear holes before long, and it does not disappoint. "Rio Índica" gives us a short instrumental interlude, and then "Quebrada Del Silencio" starts up the weedcore mayhem once again.

Spanish lyrics throughout, which fit Halfaya's weedcore like a flame goes with a bowl. I can barely understand any of it, so I don't even try, and I enjoy the songs the more for it. The singing is like an additional instrument and it's hard to imagine Halfaya without it. (Actually, "Desde El Averno" has an English chorus.)

Pure energy, over-the-top fuzz, killer vocals -- "Blunderblues" is not an album to relax with. But if you are looking to light one up and bang your head, this is the album for you.

Fuzzy's Favorite: the title track "Cruzando El Desierto" with its extended fuzzed-out guitar solos. Overall, this album rips from start to finish.

From the band:

In this new album we tried to create a union between stoner and the most primitive blues, with a powerful and good quality audio. We really worked a lot on vocal production and creating good atmospheres, with powerful riffs and some instrumental tracks that manage to give the album another color.

It's no surprise to learn that Halfaya hails from Argentina. The members include:

  • Pancho: vocals & electronics
  • Gonza: bass & vocals
  • Pela Diego: guitar & keys
  • CJ: drums & percussion

Instrumental stoner "Planet Terror" by Black Sky Giant

Instrumental stoner "Planet Terror" by Black Sky Giant

If you like your stoner music to land more on the desert side of things, and instrumental, with a bit of psychedelic flair, then BLACK SKY GIANT has just the album for you. "Planet Terror" is a collection of 7 songs with slow, fuzzy riffs with clean guitar solos that sound like they were recorded at the bottom of Death Valley. Add in some choice samples, with a dash of synths, and you have an album which will keep you mesmerized all the way through. Listen to "Planet Terror" on Bandcamp:

It's probably no surprise that Black Sky Giant is from Argentina. This is definitely an album to recommend highly.

Fuzzy's Favorite: "Perpetual waves to come" but don't miss "The phantom gun" and "Ulameth (endbringer)" with their killer use of samples.

Stoner metal INFEROUS "Somos la Noche"

Stoner metal INFEROUS "Somos la Noche"

Fuzzy has long said that Spanish is the language of stoner music. (Russian is for sludge, English is for psych, and French is for prog, in case you were wondering.) So when INFEROUS sent me their new album to check out, and I cast an eye on the Spanish lyrics, I was ready to get excited. And their new album "Somos la Noche" (we are the night) proves that Fuzzy was right all along -- these vocals must be in Spanish to support the massive slabs of fuzz that are contained on this album. Inferous blends heavy psych into their stoner doom in a way that pounds your head down into the underground, while at the same time freeing your mind to soar into outer space. Guitar solos rip over walls of distortion, with the Spanish singing weaving them together. Check out "Somos la Noche" on Bandcamp:

Dig how the instrumental opening track rips straight into the next song, where the Spanish vocals explode onto the scene. The continuity continues again into the next song, and I found the album was well into the third song before I realized the 2nd had finished. I dig this effect because it gives the album a flow which demands you listen from start to finish. Keep your manos off the pause button!

The album clocks in at nearly an hour. Dig it!

Fuzzy's Favorite: "Infierno verde" (green inferno) but really this album is meant to listen from start to finish in a single massive session of fuzz. With Spanish vocals.

From the band:

Inferous is a 3-member band from Rosario, Argentina, playing since 2018, but members of the band played in several bands from Rosario since 1994, like Testa, Knockout, Unanime, etc. The Music is a Doom/metal/stoner under influences of Dopelord, Sleep, High on Fire, Belzebong, and Black Sabbath.

"Somos la Noche" will be released on cassette tape and CD by Psycho Records.

Follow Inferous on Bandcamp to stay in touch with their merch, news, and music.

Stoner psych "Vol I" by Experiencia Tibetana

Stoner psych "Vol I" by Experiencia Tibetana

Argentina's EXPERIENCIA TIBETANA has an hour of stoner psych that you don't want to miss. Only 3 songs but's an hour of desert rock that runs from very psychedelic to very heavy, and back again. On top of all the stoner vibes are chanting vocals that are the perfect match for the mellow tones. Check out Experiencia Tibetana on Bandcamp:

"Vol. 1" was recorded in 2014 but was released earlier this year. At almost an hour, the length matches the sound, and that is to say, it is absolutely MASSIVE! This is psych with emphasis on the "space" without any fear of experimentation. This album is a Falcon 9 that isn't afraid to use its boosters to blast off into space and explore the further reaches of the universe.

"Beirut" at about 15:00 simply explodes with a guitar solo going one way, the riff going another, and the rhythm section keeping the course into the far reaches of outer space.

"Espalda de elefante" is darker and slower, and really keeps your attention despite it's nearly half hour length. Or to put it more accurately, your mind goes on a trip and you're not sure where the 30 minutes went.

"Desatormentandonos" is stoner drone. Very relaxing after the first two mind-benders.

This band definitely knows how to power a ship through space while exploring many interesting sights during the voyage.

I love Spanish in stoner music, so the softly-sung lyrics match the music in tone and lend to the overall psychedelia. I can't understand most of what is being said, and that lends to the effect of a space trip where I am experiencing things beyond my comprehension.

Experiencia Tibetana band is from Buenos Aires, Argentina with members:
  • Walter Fernandez: Guitar and Voice
  • Leandro Moreno Vila: Bass
  • David Cardozo: Guest Drum
From the band:
Created in mid-2013 in the western zone of Gran Buenos Aires, Experiencia Tibetana was born out of a spiritual quest that, influenced by bands like OM, Sleep, Ararat, Los Natas and Humo del Cairo, uses as a tool the amalgam of minimalism from the blues and the characteristic heavy rock of the '70s, with Byzantine music, the use of oriental sounds and the incorporation of mantras (natural, analog and digital).
With an EP recorded during 2014 ("Vol I") in the City of Moron, he knew how to present it in different settings, both in the suburbs and in the City of Buenos Aires, in order to produce more questions than answers about his style. Club V, El Emergente, El Jardin de los presentes, Continuum Bar, Detroit Club and El Galpón del Oeste were some of the redoubts that formed part of these ceremonies, which include the 2017 edition of the “Oeste Rock” festival. .
Currently, the band will be part of "El Gordo", a compilation that brings together different exponents of the world under and stoner scene (among which there is the presence of Argentina, Uruguay, Peru and Spain, among others) to reverse compositions of Luis Alberto Spinetta. In this work, it was Pescado Rabioso that was targeted to go through the dense and dark sound that the band knew how to print in their work.
With a view to the future of this 2020, edit their next EP and with different presentations in the City and surroundings, the trio made up of Walter Fernandez, Leandro Vila and Gaston Saccoia continues to promulgate their spiritual, crude and valve message.

Stoner hardcore VALLE GALGO crush it with their debut EP "Despertar"

Valle Galgo debut EP "Despertar"
Valle Galgo debut EP "Despertar"
Fuzzy's just about ready to release his annual 420 comp "Swamp Haze" which includes a song off the debut EP "Despertar" by VALLE GALGO. This band combines heavy stoner rock with hardcore and adds in a combination of psychedelic and sludge vocals to create a truly unique and captivating sound. When a debut EP leaves you wanting more, you know the band is onto something good. And Valle Galgo definitely leaves me wanting more! Check them out:

These songs have elements of grunge and heavy rock, but just when you think you have them figured out, they kick it high gear with supersonic guitars and sludge singing. I'm pretty sure these guys kick ass in their live show.

The Spanish vocals put this beast over the top for me. This music needs the rough edge that only this singing sound can give it.

Check out the cool artwork in this video of the instrumental version of "Valle Galgo" --

If you dig VALLE GALGO be sure to check out another killer band from Argentina called BRAHMANS CACERIA from Chile CARCANO of Italy might give you the same vibe.

Remember to follow Fuzzy so you can get my 420 comp when it drops.

Valle Galgo band is from Córdoba, Argentina.

HALFAYA S/T smokes you with weedcore

HALFAYA S/T
HALFAYA S/T
HALFAYA blasts onto the the heavy music scene with a sound they describe as "weedcore" which I describe as fuzzy metal played faster than your typical stoner music without losing the heavy bass with the same effect -- to pound your medicated brain. And I dig it! Man, I dig this album! High energy, fuzz, killer vocals .... what more do you want? Check it out!

The album blasts out of the gate with the slow-burning and then exploding instrumental track "El Paso De Halfaya", but no worries if you miss the singing, because the next track cranks it up even higher with vocals. I love how "Vienen Por Vos" continues right on from the first track. I dig it so much it will be included on my Ultimate Summer Stoner com dropping at the end of August -- right on! Be sure to follow me on Bandcamp to get a download code to the comp when it drops.

Did you notice the vocals are in Spanish? The language of stoner music? Which makes this album even better. To say these guys are from Argentina is to state the obvious.

This whole album plays out like a long song in the way the sound flows so well. Like a fast-moving flow of molten lava, or a non-stop fireworks show. It slows down here and there, and just enough to keep pounding away at you with the guitar making fast knife attacks while the bass is dealing the body blows.

So now you know what "weedcore" is and let's hope for more of it from HALFAYA.

Halfaya (Hellfire In Arabic) is a band from Rosario, SantaFe, Argentina that started 2 years ago, as a drum and bass duo formed by Gonzalo, the bassist, and Juan, the drummer, with the idea of making some songs and jam in the rehearsal. The band end up being what it is today with the addition of singer, Pancho and guitar player, Diego a.k.a. Pelado. The band influences and genres go through stoner, hardcore, doom, thrash metal and so on, with bands like Helmet, Corrosion of Conformity, Black Sabbath, Truckfighters, and some local examples like Pappo's Blues, Aeroblus and others.

That's why Halfaya likes to call their mixture of genres and Influences Stonercore or Weedcore.

TELESTHESIA by METADRON is like a greatest hits psych album

TELESTHESIA by METADRON
TELESTHESIA by METADRON
Late night wandering on Instagram got me somehow to this incredible psychedelic trio out of Argentina called METADRON. They have several albums in their catalog already, and you can hear the sound of a band in full command of their skills on TELESTHESIA. It is 8 tracks which are shorter in length, so the album plays out like an EP. Each song is so good this sounds like a greatest hits record. The music is upbeat, the keys get spacey, and the vocals are dreamy. FFO early Brian Jonestown Experience, Black Angels, and any great psychedelic music. Favorite track: Seven Seas.

METADRON is:
Drums & percussion: Nicolás Miele
Bass: Rodrigo Zacha Marchesi
Synth / Rhythm & lead guitar/ Vox: Mariano Miele
Rhythm guitar on track 3 and 8: Alexis Ipi Ayala

NOPERSONA stoner rock from ARGENTINA and BAND INTERVIEW

NOPERSONA stoner rock from ARGENTINA
NOPERSONA stoner rock from ARGENTINA
Argentina has some of the very best stoner bands out there today, and NOPERSONA is amongst the very best of them. Nopersona is a trio that delivers riffs from hard rock to stoner rock to stoner metal and even a dash of alternative and punk in their catalog of songs. The latest album from Nopersona is a collection of their songs recorded live. Take a listen and scroll down for my interview with the band:

ESCENAS DE VIDAS PASADAS is the most recent studio album from Nopersona:

Nopersona is Nico on vocals and guitar, Pichi on bass, and Chene on drums.

I caught up with Nico a few weeks ago to find out more about NOPERSONA:

Hi man! Thanks for taking the time to talk to me! Tell me how Nopersona got started?
Nopersona formed in 2015 near Buenos Aires, Argentina. We are all from previous bands.
Nico on vocals and guitar
The albums have a variety of sounds. They are all centered around stoner, but some are more heavy rock, and some are more towards alternative.
Our goal has been to play songs with a variety of sounds, so that is why sometimes you hear us play stoner and sometimes alternative. Also some of our songs are in Spanish and sometimes we sing in English. It all depends on making the song with the right sound.
You will hear stoner riffs in our songs, and sometimes also black metal, and perhaps sometimes even tango. And of course Black Sabbath!
We like to describe the sound of Nopersona as, "Rock and Roll from the downtown of the Third World."
Nico on vocals and guitar
What does the band's name "NOPERSONA" come from? What does it represent?
One of our inspirations is the book "1984" by George Orwell. In that book, the government removed dissidents from history and this was the name given to those people. It is like they were never a person, or "no person."
Chene on drums
Thanks for your time, guys!

LOW MACHINE S/T debut album stoner synths

LOW MACHINE S/T debut album
LOW MACHINE S/T debut album
Debut album from LOW MACHINE is 45 solid minutes of instrumental and vocals stoner with layers of synths and effects giving it a taste of krautrock as they describe it. Each song has a slightly different sound with some going very heavy rock and others going a little doom. And a few great samples. Variety is a good thing when it works, and it works here. A welcome addition to the already amazing amount of music from The Heavy South America. If you are in a hurry then go straight to Fangio which is a really beautiful song with its mix of stoner and synths and fuzz, or check out Reset which showcases the variety of the vocals along with some very heavy fuzz.

Low Machine is Francisco Palavezzati (Guitar, voicing, synths, mixing and mastering), Joni Cabrera (guitars, bass), Matthieu Bellemere (drums).
