FRIDAY: "Waiting Room" from MELLOW BEAST psych rock

Psychedelic rocker MELLOW BEAST drops a new album "Waiting Room" this Friday, August 19th, on Bandcamp. "Waiting Room" continues the story of Sir Gregory with special guest vocalist, FEROCIOUS MAGGIE. Fuzzy really digs the mellow, catchy vibes of Mellow Beast, so give it a listen:

From the band:

Folk rock "Hell Is Other People" from duo THE FAIRGREEN BAND

Folk rock debut "Hell Is Other People" from THE FAIRGREEN BAND

Dig the new album "Hell Is Other People" from the UK's THE FAIRGREEN BAND. Lots and lots of catchy folk rock riffs with a fuzzy edge that I'm really enjoying. The duo of Paul Austin and Oli Mortham combine acoustic and electric guitars to deliver an ultra fresh collection of tunes. Great vocals, too. Listen to The Fairgreen Band on Bandcamp:

Fuzzy's Favorite: "Ruby Knows" captures The Fairgreen Band's unique take on folk rock.

FFO: Crow Ballard, Willow Ash, Fairyport Convent.

ATOMIC DRAG doom surf EP "Black Magic Spells and Other Neat Weird Stuff"

Last year I reviewed the debut EP from solo surf band ATOMIC DRAG, and last week saw the release of his newest EP, "Black Magic Spells and Other Neat Weird Stuff". If you dig surf riffs, solo bands, and instrumental music, then this collection of 5 tunes will get your gears cranking. Fuzzy really digs the dark edge that Atomic Drag puts on his surf music. EVEN VAST "Warped Existence" is now on CD from Moon Relic Records

"Warped Existence" by EVEN VAST has just gotten a release on CD from MOON RELIC RECORDS, with the addition of 5 live tracks. If you missed the album during its original release, here is your chance to discover Even Vast's heavy rock sound with some elements of grunge and doom, and absolutely killer vocals. Check out  "Warped Existence" from Even Vast on Bandcamp:

I did some quick research on Even Vast, and it seems they have been around a while and started off in Italy, with a relocation to the UK and a resurgence in 2018 with "Inside Your Head" and finally this album following up in 2019. Now that they have signed with MOON RELIC RECORDS and released the remastered album on CD, I am sure we are going to hearing a lot more from Even Vast!

The live tracks really push this beast over the top, both in terms of overall length and it's always great to get live versions. But what makes these so special for me is the inclusion of the saxophone. The sax is an instrument is a rare instrument in the stoner world, but if it was good enough for The Stooges, then it should be good enough for more bands! And it sounds absolutely killer here.  (The sax is on the studio cuts too, and it seems to really stand out on the live versions.)

This release is really a double album. With 5 live tracks, you can't say that you aren't getting value for your money with this!

I've got a copy of the CD on the way and I can't wait to spin it!

Fuzzy's Favorite: "Imaginary Friend (Live)"

Even Vast is from Nottingham, UK with members:

  • Luca Martello (guitar)
  • Chris Taylor (vocals)
  • Steve Kilpatrick (bass)
  • Nicholas Mark Roe (drums)
  • Alessandro D'Arcangeli (woodwind)

Psych rock concept album "The Tale of Sir Gregory" by MELLOWBEAST

Fuzzy really enjoyed last year's psych rock concept album debut from MELLOWBEAST, and the Story of Hyperion continues with their new release "The Tale of Sir Gregory" which is the 3rd album in the tale. This album has more of MellowBeast's easygoing early 70s psychedelia sound which is so carefree and natural that it can't help but to lift your spirits and carry you along in a wave of upbeat tempos. And what about our hero, Sir Gregory? Have a listen on Bandcamp to find out:

"The Tale of Sir Gregory" has a story to connect the songs, which is hardly a requirement when the songs are so consistently good across the album, but the theme of a magic kingdom filled with dragons, goblins, and heroes fits so well with the music that the concept serves to elevate the entire project to the top of the current roster of psych rock bands.

According to MellowBeast, the timeline of the story does not match the release dates of the albums. Here's the story of Hyperion in chronological order:

  • The Tale of Sir Gregory -- With the threat of a goblin attack looming the last king of man sends for his loyal knight sir Gregory to go on a deadly journey across Hyperion in search of a weapon powerful enough to stop the goblin hordes. On his journey he stumbles upon a dragon with whom he quickly becomes infatuated with. The dragon queen, sympathetic to Gregory's cause decides to aid him. The pair of star-crossed lovers search for an old sorcerer who has helped the dragon in the past. It is then that they discover the sorcerer was behind the goblin attacks. In their combined rage the dragons soul embues into Gregory's sword creating an all powerful weapon. Eventually Gregory is defeated in combat and the dragon spends the rest of her days within the sword, brewing hatred for the wizard
  • Sorcerers Sword -- A devotee conjurer is deeply saddened by his sudden loss of magical powers. In his darkest day he hears whispers calling to him. Whispers from a sword long forgotten to time. After aquiring the sword, madness soon creeps in. Plagued by terrible visions he takes it upon himself to cleanse the planet of Hyperion and create a new world in his own vision.
  • Hyperion -- This album is set in present day. A man bored of his mundane life finds him self teleported to an alien world full of weird and wonderful creatures who are obsessed with a prophecy telling of a hero that will come and save the world from the reign of the evil wizard

I'm hoping for at least one more album in the Story of Hyperion, since the last song is entitled "The Kingdom is Burning." Sounds like a cliff-hanger!

Catchy riffs, guitar solos, vocal styles for the characters, all wrapped up in a fantasy epic. "The Tale of Sir Gregory" is another great psych rock album from MellowBeast.

Heavy metal "Vs. Gargantuan" by SUPERLORD

Heavy metal "Vs. Gargantuan" by SUPERLORD

TLDR; Hell yea!

"Vs. Gargantuan" by SUPERLORD rips. Simple as that. 4 tracks that spend most of 30 minutes laying down a metal assault that is both super fresh but also reminiscent of the best of 70s and 80s metal.

I would still listen to 80s metal if it all sounded this good. And to be fair (to the band, not to 80s metal), SUPERLORD adds some modern elements from stoner doom like extended riffs and an extra layer of fuzz. And the clean guitar solos (especially in "Desert Ruins") are right out the best of 70s heavy rock. That's not to say any of these riffs are derivative. Not in the least. It's more like, SUPERLORD is inspired a lot of great music, and on "Vs. Gargantuan" they are sharing those inspirations with us.

Fuzzy's Favorite: "Desert Ruins" which is easily one of the best songs from last year that I've heard. But the whole EP is just as solid and just as good, and the extended length of "Alice Olive" definitely gives it some bonus points, while the vocals on the title track are flat-out heroic (musically and lyrically).

SUPERLORD is from England with members:

  • Aaron Brennan - Guitar/Vox
  • Tom Humphrey - Bass
  • Mike Whittle - Drums

Psych rock MELLOWBEAST debut trip "Hyperion"

MELLOWBEAST debut trip "Hyperion"
MELLOWBEAST debut trip "Hyperion"
I hope this review finds you & your loved ones & friends safe and calm. At least we still have great music to enjoy. It's well known that Fuzzy loves his psych rock. (Hello, The Lancasters and Trahir.) So imagine my delight as I started listening to the debut album "Hyperion" from Belfast's MELLOWBEAST. This is the absolute essence of what psych rock is to me: fuzzy riffs laced with spaced-out guitars and vocals. And a theme to tie all the songs together into an experience. Kick back, open your mind, and let the dreamy vibes of MellowBeast flow over your mind:

The riffs, the guitar work, the vocals ... every psych rock fan is going to love this album.

Some might consider "Hyperion" to be a concept album, which I agree with, or perhaps it might be closer to the mark to say it's thematic or a collection of poetic songs that swirl around the dreams of a fuzzed-out traveler.

Dare I say this album can hold its own against such classics as The Small Faces' "Nut Gone" or other seminal psych albums of the late 60s? Yes, Fuzzy dares to say that.

The Mrs. Cracklins mini review: "Psychedelic Hypnotic" while she's dancing around the Happy Hour floor.

MellowBeast band is from Belfast, UK and has this to say:
From a small bedroom on the border of Northern Ireland, mystical sounds can be heard echoing throughout this sleepy hill town. Mellow Beast is a solo project conceived by Paul Scott with only one mission in mind. To take it's listeners on a sonic journey to distant lands

Blues rock LOYDS TRIP debut EP

Blues rock LOYDS TRIP debut EP
Blues rock LOYDS TRIP debut EP
First things first -- I hope this finds all of you safe along with your family and friends as well. These are crazy times so stay away from people. While you are hunkered down in isolation, you might as well listen to some great music, and the debut EP from the UK's LOYDS TRIP delivers the blues rock goods. Check it out:

Things start off hard and heavy in "Decaf Blues" and they don't let up until the bluesy goodness of this trio of tracks has played out. This album has all the hallmarks of a great blues rock album with slide guitar, heavy bass, and killer vocals.

The middle song "The Trip" is probably Fuzzy's favorite, although let's keep it real -- all of these songs deliver the kind of music that makes it hard not to get up and stomp around the bar.

There is some incredible guitar work going on here, too, especially in "Bridges" and it will leave you wanting Loyds Trip to drop a full album. In the meantime, play this on repeat and let the good times roll as good as you can manage.

Psych rock "The Great Expanse" by Isak is an EPIC album

Psych rock "The Great Expanse" by Isak
Psych rock "The Great Expanse" by Isak
Fuzzy tries not to use the word "EPIC" too often, because then it won't mean what it should. But let's break it down and see how it works on the new album from the UK's Isak named "The Great Expanse." It's 45 minutes. It's got great rifts. The album flows with climbs up thundering peaks and dives deep into chill valleys, finally ending in a with such a grand conclusion that your mind is left wondering what just happened. The beat section keeps it heavy when it's needed and backs off as required to let the guitar work shine through. Finally, this has had so many spins here in The Swamp during the past month that I'm left with only one word for this album ... EPIC! Check out "The Great Expanse" from Isak:

Three of the seven tracks have vocals which float over the music very nicely, and the instrumental tracks have so much going on that you won't mind they are without singing. The album plays so well as a whole there's not really any need to single out a particular song, but I will say that the final track "Call of the Void" crystallizes Isak's sound at its finest. But start at the beginning and enjoy the ride until you get to this song.

Isak
Isak is from Scotland with members:
  • Joe McGarrity (Guitar/Vox)
  • Mark Tait (Bass)
  • Robert "Twigs" McLean (Drums)
  • Hannah White - The Deity (additional vocals)
From the band:
Isak came together early 2012 to create music we love. After a long summer of jamming and soul searching, we are ready to let you ride along. Our music is a blend of heavy fuzz, stoner grooves and psychedelic space jams.

PSYCHIC LEMON new album FREAK MAMMAL drops Nov. 8

PSYCHIC LEMON new album FREAK MAMMAL drops Nov. 8
PSYCHIC LEMON new album FREAK MAMMAL drops Nov. 8
I have loved the upbeat edgy instrumental psych sound of PSYCHIC LEMON for a while now, so when they sent me their upcoming album FREAK MAMMAL there was no doubt I was going to dig it. But even with high expectations, this album blows me away. You know how it is -- that thrill you feel when you realize a killer band has taken their sound up a few notches. Check out the lead single "White Light" available now:

(You can also download the single from Bandcamp on the Psychic Lemon site).

Ya can't miss the high energy Krautrock and prog flavors these guys bring to their music. "Krautfunk" as they call it.

How is the rest of the album that lands on 8 November? Just as killer. "Dark Matter" is longer at 10 minutes and begins, well, darker (and slower). A very cool slow burn leads up to the guitar start dropping the distortion, the keys kick in, and we're off.  "Seeds of Tranquility" is the longest song (over 13 minutes) which delivers enough music on its own that it could be the EP for another band, and is the most spaced-out song on the album. "Afrotropic Bomb" which is aptly named, it's very groovy and sets off an explosion. It blends so nicely into "Free Electron Collective" that I had to check my player to see I was into the next track. And finally, the lead single "White Light" anchors the album to finish things off in grand style.

FREAK MAMMAL is 47 minutes of pure pumped-up psychedelic power. Get on it! Follow Psychic Lemon on Bandcamp to get the word when the album drops on November 8, and check out their other social links below.

Psychic Lemon is out of the UK and its members are:
  • Andy Briston: Guitar, synths
  • Andy Hibberd: Bass
  • Martin Law: Drums
From the band:
  • FFO: Hawkwind, Goat, Amon Düül II
  • LP 500 copies (300 on freaky green and black vinyl, 200 on transparent green vinyl)
  • Label: Drone Rock Records

The Crawling Eye debut EP No Short Stays alternative rock

The Crawling Eye debut EP No Short Stays
The Crawling Eye debut EP No Short Stays
A few months ago, we had a song from Ten No.6 on Lunosphere X and now Matthew Witherstone (the guitarist) has a new side project called THE CRAWLING EYE which includes a new singer and they have a very smooth, cool, alternative sound. Matthew is playing guitar, bass, harmonica, and melodica with singing by Simon Thomas. There's a nice variety to the songs, with No Short Stays starting right off with Simon's vocals, Let The Day Begin keeping things alternative, Nothing New going acoustic, and What You Wanted veering into reggae. Check it out:

I asked Matthew about how The Crawling Eye came together:
Simon Thomas was the singer in in a band I was with in the 90's. We were called Interzone and had an EP released on an independent label. We signed a publishing deal then imploded. We both gave up on music, but over the years I'd always wanted to record with him again - I just love his voice.
When I was approached to do Ten No.6 I had a bunch of songs that didn't fit that group, so I mentioned to Simon the possibility of me and him recording a few songs at Frank Naughton's studio in Cardiff. We did the session last weekend and this is the result - hopefully more to follow, we've got around another 10 songs.
Right on, guys -- bring on more songs! This is really good.

The Sun That Burned Too Long EP by Shy Lizard alternative rock from Wales

The Sun That Burned Too Long EP by Shy Lizard
The Sun That Burned Too Long EP by Shy Lizard
THE SUN THAT BURNED TOO LONG is the debut EP from alternative rock trio Shy Lizard from Swansea in South Wales, UK. It's full of catchy hooks delivered with grungy, crunchy guitar riffs and punchy drum work. Shy Lizard is all about clean, tight songs that swirl around with a taste of punk and garage without getting too far away from solid rock & roll songs. There is a nice variety of sounds even with just five tracks. Some get a little more distorted, some stay a little cleaner. The band is Ed, Cherie and Levi with Ed and Levi alternating on lead vocals like at their live shows. I really dig this EP so stream the music for yourself after the break....

Into The Wilderness by The King's Pistol

It's not all doom and gloom here in The Swamp. Especially when Happy Hour rolls around. Mrs. Cracklins mixes the cocktails, I drink them, and we fire up the 1984 vintage stereo with the big speakers that somehow still work. A recent discovery we made in our wanderings around on Instagram has been a trio out of northwest England named The King's Pistol. If I hadn't spoiled it already, you might think these guys were from The South as in USA.

Or in their own words,

A unique blend of twisted-folk, country-punk, Americana and rock n' roll

Take a listen to The King's Pistol playlist on Spotify -- (use this link if you don't see the embedded player)

Their sound is all their own but at the same time if you love that folk and southern rock sound then you know what you are in for. Mix up a few drinks, kick back, and enjoy the tunes.

Andy, Julian, and Jim
The King's Pistol is Andy on bass, Jim on drums and slide guitar, and Julian aka The Pistol on vocals and guitar.

The King's Pistol plays plenty of shows in their area so if you are near Chesire be sure to check them out.

Their new single "Evil Spirits" drops this Friday, with the new album out next month. Stay in touch with The King's Pistol at ....

You can catch The King's Pistol track "Pistol Whipped" on Fuzzy's The Heavy South which drops on April 5.

Live at the Globe by Moon Goose album review by Fuzzy Cracklins

Live at the Globe by Moon Goose
Live at the Globe by Moon Goose

Live at the Globe is the second EP from UK group Moon Goose. And while they call their music psychedelic, don't think it is going to lull you into a dreamy haze of contemplation. These tunes have a lot of trippy energy. Stream it for free and read Fuzzy Cracklin's music review of the instrumental psychedelic album Live at the Globe by Moon Goose below....
