SALIGA psych prog debut "Förödelsetrilogin"

Swedish duo SALIGA presents their debut EP "Förödelsetrilogin" ("The Destruction Trilogy") which is instrumental heavy psych, with some progressive flair and lighter psychedelic influences which result in an excellent listening experience. These songs sort of float between the dividing line of heavy psych and psych and prog with various moments of catchy riffs, samples, and guitar solos. Fuzzy is really digging this one on "repeat" and any psych fan should give "Förödelsetrilogin" a listen on Bandcamp:

Fuzzy loves samples, and the 2nd track "Urknallen / Livsriffet" fades them in and out to interact with the guitars, almost as if they are taking turns in telling a story. Really dig this one.

To my ears, the first song is the most in the heavy psych genre, with the second leaning more towards pure psych, and the final song including the most elements of prog. But that's kind of splitting hairs, as all the songs blend the genres together to great effect. The result is an excellent debut EP which any fan of psych will enjoy.

The band tells me that "Förödelsetrilogin" is the first in a trilogy of albums. I'm looking forward to the next 2 installments!

From the band:

We are two guys from Malmö, Sweden who create music under the name Saliga. The project started about 8 months ago when we both got tired of making music that was bound to a bunch of unwritten rules. So we rented a small rehearsal space and built our own studio in there. The process is iterative, exhausting and often weird, but we are very happy with the result.

Instrumental psych "Intentionally Blank" by DYSGENIA

More great instrumental psych for your ears this week. This time, DYSGENIA delivers "Intentionally Blank" which is an instrumental psych album with elements of progressive rock and metal. Think back to the great guitar-centric psychedelic & prog bands of the early 70s, and you'll have an idea of where Dysgenia's sound is rooted. Keeping it instrumental lets the musicians sing without any vocal distractions. In fact, vocals wouldn't add anything to this collection of heavy psych bangers. (Perhaps the album title agrees with this sentiment.)  Have a listen to "Intentionally Blank" on Bandcamp:

The album explodes out of the gate with "Sea Hag" and then rips along from one epic track to the next. Dysgenia have a knack for creating slower moments from which they can unleash a giant wave of sound delivered by a catchy riff. The middle of "The Other" is one example, but most of the songs have an equally huge sound to them.

"Intentionally Blank" has a variety and fearless experimentalism which any fan of psychedelic music will appreciate, especially given that the songs all feel like they belong on the same album together. Even when things get downright radical such as in "Perceptual Dichotomy," it feels more like the climax to what's come before it than it does as the most progressive song of the album. In fact, if the band suggested a theme or added some lyrics, this would be the soundtrack for a great concept album. Although, let's remember the title of the album is, "Intentionally Blank."

A lot of creativity and effort has gone into the production of this album to achieve this result. I really dig the length, too. Close to 40 minutes makes for a solid listening experience.

If you dig psych with a prog influence, you will dig "Intentionally Blank" by DYSGENIA. Great production quality, too.

Fuzzy's Favorite: "Laws of Variation" which typifies the experimentation with sonic grandeur found on all of the songs.

Dysgenia hails from Portland with members:

  • Dustin Vandehey: Guitars
  • Riley Holland: Bass
  • Brian Wilson: Drums

From the band:

"How much can you you say without words?" That's the question these Portland-based musical veterans seek to explore with their boundary-dissolving instrumental psych/prog/metal outfit Dysgenia. With influences like Tool, Secret Chiefs 3, Primus, Russian Circles, Frank Zappa, and Pantera, Dysgenia have distilled their own unique brand of controlled musical chaos, equal parts head, heart, and gut.

Prog psych "Sage" by Wąż

"Instrumental psychedelic with a progressive edge" is how Fuzzy describes the debut album "Sage" by Poland's Wąż. A blend of stoner, prog metal, and ambient all tied together with a psychedelic sound. This is instrumental stoner music with a lot going on. Check out "Sage" by Wąż on Bandcamp:

The songs range from prog metal (the title track "Sage) to mellow ambient ("Solaris") and a blend of both ("Prism") yet the variety really works here. There is a flow and a cohesion to the songwriting that makes for an enjoyable trip across the various styles of music.

Fuzzy's favorite: "Prism" really gets its groove going with its 10-minute run, while "Sage" seems to capture the essence of Wąż's sound, and was a good choice for the title track. The entire album delivers a solid 47 minutes instrumental prog & psych.

Check out the CD and follow Wąż at https://wazband.bandcamp.com/album/sage

and

From the band:
Wąż was founded in late 2014 in Cracow by Arek Kaus (gr) Bartek Szeląg (bs) Kamil Łazorczyk (dr) and Paweł Piecha (voc). In 2016 band released on Youtube two singles: Demons in my Head & Revolution. Later on Kuba Szyma joined Wąż on drums and the band evolved into an instrumental trio. Music of the group is a mix of progressive metal compositions, stoner rock grooves and psychedelic trip passages.
Wąż is from Poland with members:
  • Arek Kaus - guitar/synths
  • Bartek Szeląg - bass
  • Kuba Szyma - drums

Grunge psych "Lustitia" by T'SUN on Big Wood Records

"Lustitia" by T'SUN on Big Wood Records
"Lustitia" by T'SUN on Big Wood Records
T'SUN is a solo instrumental grunge psych band that recently released "Lustitia" on Big Wood Records. It's nearly 30 minutes over 2 tracks that deliver a very mellow and engaging set of songs. There is a melody that ties them together in a slow pace that makes this album a great choice when you need to hear something more on the relaxing side, or in the background while you're focusing elsewhere. There's a smattering of sound effects to lend to the chill atmosphere. Take a break with "Lustitia" by T'SUN:

Lustitia was written, produced, recorded by Brandon Welch. From the band:
This Album is the audible story of  life before and after  tragedy. Part1 touching on the weeks and months of optimism  and tranquility that life can offer you moments before it decides to challenge you. Part2 opening with a loud crash followed by a new level of emotion. Not as upbeat and social. Part2 carries a moody less hopeful, darker undertone than Part1 initially presents. During the recovery process of silence we find find a new sound to push us forward. We need to find patience and an even darker moment of silence before the music finds us once again. This album finish with hope truth and the feeling of wanting more......

CROW CRASH RADIO new album "ghostwaves" is killer stoner psych

I have enjoyed the instrumental psychedelic trio CROW CRASH RADIO for a while now, ever since they put a track on my PSYCHEDELIC CIRCUS compilation on Bandcamp earlier this year. This band includes one member playing theremin which is not only a rarity in any band, but is really the instrument that sounds more "psychedelic" to me than any other. It creates a haunting synth-like sound created without any physical contact from its player, and Crow Crash Radio uses it to such great effect that I am always glad to hear from the band when they have new music. Listen to the stream of Crow Crash Radio's "ghostwaves" on Bandcamp:

Crow Crash Radio gets a little heavier with this album, and "The Profane Twin" is a flat-out great stoner tune. Each song seems to give the focus over to one of the instruments, which gives each song a very unique sound compared to the others. The last track "It'll All Wash Away" is much closer to drone with long sections given over to the drums while the theremin and guitar work to create a drawn-out intoxicating hum. "ghostwaves" indeed!

Crow Crash Radio is out of Oakland CA and its members are:
  • Brian Strang: guitar
  • Andrew Joron: theremin
  • Mark Pino: drums
From the band:
Crow Crash Radio pilots a flying saucer deep into the unconscious of American roots music, producing an ambience that is both dreamy and driving: a form of retro-futurist instrumental rock. Crow Crash Radio is both retro and futurist. Theremin-based, this instrumental trio play Cosmic American Music, filled with the shadows of American gospel, blues and the soulful drones of the Near East mysticism. The sound is both quiet and meditative but also driving and hypnotic, gently carrying their audiences into the mystery at the heart of universal musical roots.

PSYCHIC LEMON new album FREAK MAMMAL drops Nov. 8

PSYCHIC LEMON new album FREAK MAMMAL drops Nov. 8
PSYCHIC LEMON new album FREAK MAMMAL drops Nov. 8
I have loved the upbeat edgy instrumental psych sound of PSYCHIC LEMON for a while now, so when they sent me their upcoming album FREAK MAMMAL there was no doubt I was going to dig it. But even with high expectations, this album blows me away. You know how it is -- that thrill you feel when you realize a killer band has taken their sound up a few notches. Check out the lead single "White Light" available now:

(You can also download the single from Bandcamp on the Psychic Lemon site).

Ya can't miss the high energy Krautrock and prog flavors these guys bring to their music. "Krautfunk" as they call it.

How is the rest of the album that lands on 8 November? Just as killer. "Dark Matter" is longer at 10 minutes and begins, well, darker (and slower). A very cool slow burn leads up to the guitar start dropping the distortion, the keys kick in, and we're off.  "Seeds of Tranquility" is the longest song (over 13 minutes) which delivers enough music on its own that it could be the EP for another band, and is the most spaced-out song on the album. "Afrotropic Bomb" which is aptly named, it's very groovy and sets off an explosion. It blends so nicely into "Free Electron Collective" that I had to check my player to see I was into the next track. And finally, the lead single "White Light" anchors the album to finish things off in grand style.

FREAK MAMMAL is 47 minutes of pure pumped-up psychedelic power. Get on it! Follow Psychic Lemon on Bandcamp to get the word when the album drops on November 8, and check out their other social links below.

Psychic Lemon is out of the UK and its members are:
  • Andy Briston: Guitar, synths
  • Andy Hibberd: Bass
  • Martin Law: Drums
From the band:
  • FFO: Hawkwind, Goat, Amon Düül II
  • LP 500 copies (300 on freaky green and black vinyl, 200 on transparent green vinyl)
  • Label: Drone Rock Records

Tętno Pulsu by LASTRYKO instrumental psych + synths = KILLER

Tętno Pulsu by LASTRYKO
Tętno Pulsu by LASTRYKO
So much great instrumental psych is landing in The Swamp lately! Just a few days ago we got to hear BILLY TSOUNIS and today it is Poland's LASTRYKO. The album is called "Tętno Pulsu" and has over 45 minutes of killer instrumental psychedelic music with synths added into the mix, and a touch of Krautrock to kick up the energy level. This band combines repetition with variation so keep the songs moving upward and into space. Have a listen to Tętno Pulsu by LASTRYKO:

The album starts off right with nearly ten minutes of "Jeden" which is spacey but not to fast or heavy. "Just right."

"Dwa" really gets moving and has some great solo guitar work. The bass line is heavy and fast, and this might be my favorite track on an album that has only great songs.

"Trzy" dials back the speed and delivers the most psychedelic song, with a couple more shorter songs before the album ends with "Sześć" getting back to the longer tracks. There is a not a weak or mediocre song on this album, and if you are a fan of instrumental psych then you will totally dig Tętno Pulsu by LASTRYKO.

Lastryko is:
Wojciech Lacki - bass
Jacek Rezner - drums
Artur Bieszke - guitar
Maciej Szkudlarek - synthesizers

WARP DELIGHT from BILLY TSOUNIS is instrumental improv psych perfection (with band interview)

WARP DELIGHT from BILLY TSOUNIS
WARP DELIGHT from BILLY TSOUNIS
Fuzzy loves instrumental. Fuzzy loves psych. Fuzzy loves jams & improvisations. Fuzzy loves The Swamp. So when a band gets at me to have a listen to their new instrumental psych improv album which includes a song entitled "Gone Swamp Shopping", I'm right there! You will be too, because the new album WARP DELIGHTS from BILLY TSOUNIS is just plain killer. Each song has its own style to give the album a nice variety, and each song sticks to its theme without getting lost or repetitive. These are full energy songs, too. Give a listen to WARP DELIGHTS:

The album opens with a pair of shorter songs that waste no time introducing everything that Billy Tsounis has to deliver: energetic guitar solos, full-force psychedelic improvisation, and never a place where the songs get lost in their meanderings.

"Gone Swamp Shopping" is my favorite not only for its title but I love how much energy it delivers. For this song, "shopping" is a euphemism for "blasting off into space at warp speed" to take us on a wild ride amongst the stars. There's simply not a skippable song on this album.

"Last Dance Space Boots" is a little shorter than the others, but delivers its sonic energy with style and does not feel rushed.

"Babalas Lilo" gets back to a longer song and might be the most experimental track on the album.

"Becoming Butterfly" slows it back down, and after Babalas Lilo a break is a nice thing. A good album has a pace and flow to it amongst its songs, and WARP DELIGHT has that covered.

There's not many bands delivering instrumental psych jams or improvisations right now with the kind of quality high-energy sound as WARP DELIGHT.  A band of similar talent and style is INSEKTLIFE CYCLE out of the Philippines so check them out, too.

I reached out to Billy Tsounis with a few questions --

Fuzzy: Would you call your songs jams? or improvisations? or ... ?

Billy Tsounis:
A majority of the songs on the album are jams / improvisations based off specific riffs / chord progressions. I had a rough frame for most and colored in. The songs "Cow Lands Plane Eats Pilot" and "Last Dance Spaceboots", "Messy Nostalgia Machines" as well as "Too Nervous to Reincarnate" were structured and I improvised over them.
Fuzzy: Any plans for a CD?

Billy Tsounis:
The CD will be available by the end of October. [Fuzzy: right on!]

Aris Weathersby, Billy Tsounis, Theron Lynnot, Lucas Marquardt

The band members are:
BILLY TSOUNIS- GUITARS
LUCAS MARQUARDT- ELECTRIC CELLO
ARIS WEATHERSBY- BASS
WILL RURY- DRUMS
Some info from the band:
Billy Tsounis is a guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist based out of Southern California. Originally from Athens Greece, he grew up in Johannesburg South Africa and later moved to Boston MA to attend Berklee College of Music. Later he moved to Los Angeles and soon after signed with indie label TON music which released the  debut cd of his psychedelic/freak pop/experimental band Vasoline Tuner which continues to record/perform to date.
Billy has several solo releases available, the most recent being “Warp Delights” as well as having had his music placed on the CBS and MTV networks. He is currently signed with Rescue Records/5 Alarm music for the representation of some of his compositions for film/TV. In 2016 he was the music director and  performed in the backing band for the Spanish production of Grease “Vaselina “. In 2017 he co-wrote/recorded the album “four” with hard rock band Circus of Power featuring Brant Bjork on drums.
He currently   performs with his all instrumental psychedelic/experimental/jazz rock  band, Billy Tsounis and The Amazing Androids, does session and live guitar work,  music therapy for adult day care/mental rehab centers throughout Riverside CA, is a faculty guitar instructor at Temecula Music Academy,  Harvard Street Music Exchange in Hemet CA, along with collaborating/playing/recording  with rock gods of various pedigree.
Billy is featured in the January 2017 issue of Guitar Player magazine in the play it forward section for his work in mentoring players young and old and for his work encouraging creativity in his music therapy classes.
WARP DELIGHT is available for streaming and download now, and Billy Tsounis has a CD on the way at the end of this month. So be sure to follow him on Bandcamp to find out when it's ready and stay on top of his new music:

GREENSTONE debut EP "TRIGLAW" instrumental stoner psych from The Netherlands

GREENSTONE debut EP "TRIGLAW"
GREENSTONE debut EP "TRIGLAW"
Three tracks of instrumental stoner psych from The Netherlands. That alone should be enough to get you to listen to the debut EP "Triglaw" from GREENSTONE. Then allow me to add that we get nice long songs, and a variety of sounds between the tracks. Add in some psychedelic flair and this really is a top rate effort. A full album of this might just about blow your mind.

I dig that each track is so distinct. There is a sonic theme to tie them all together, but each one really stands out on its own. Shrine of Moloch starts off mysteriously with some Eastern riffs and a choice sample, and then blasts off and lets you know this EP is going to rip. Far Beyond the Tannhäuser Gate has a tempo change which gives it a sense of drama, and also I love the use of samples. Starfish Prime has some huge riffs, but also has some of the most spacey sections too and the guitar work is simply excellent. (I will add there is a sample on the last track but will let you discover it on your own.)

It is difficult to select a favorite track here. The only thing to do is put this on REPEAT and just keep listening.

GREENSTONE is
Drums: Wesley Aalbers
Bass: Michael Crooijmans
Guitar: Kaj Heesakkers
Here's the description from the band's Bandcamp page:
Greenstone, in its current formation, was formed in early 2018. Binding elements in this trinity are riffs, grooves and effect boxes. So no vocals, but massive (stoner) rock. Raw yet expansive, a resonance of subterranean rumbling, ethereal echoes and human intervention.

VIVID DREAMS PARADE by THE INSEKTLIFE CYCLE instrumental psychedelic improvisation

VIVID DREAMS PARADE by THE INSEKTLIFE CYCLE
VIVID DREAMS PARADE by THE INSEKTLIFE CYCLE
It's rare that I review an album that was released a few years ago but sometimes the music is so good you just have to give it the attention it deserves. And VIVID DREAMS PARADE by THE INSEKTLIFE CYCLE deserves it. This band has few peers (any?) when it comes to instrumental psychedelic improvisation because the songs are full of musical inspiration and variety while keeping the structure and flow of a written song. Improvisation on a theme rather than a free flow jam. And when the music is performed by such skillful musicians .... well, just have a listen for yourself:

The Insektlife Cycle is based in the Philippines, and its members are Joy Legason (bass), Ronnel Vivo (guitars & synth), Jay Jumawan (guitars), and Ronaldo S. Vivo, Jr. on drums (and he also did the excellent albumm art).

Satánicos Marihuanos new album Inmerso en El Ande is EPIC heavy psych

Inmerso en El Ande by Satánicos Marihuanos
Back on 420, one of the tracks on my Blood Moon God comp was the pre-mix version of INMERSO IN EL ANDE by SATÁNICOS MARIHUANOS and the band said the full album was on the way. Today is the day with six tracks and fifty minutes of absolutely top rate heavy psych being delivered. I loved the pre-mix version of Inmerso en El Ande, and the new final version is even better with the addition of effects and ambient sounds. With an emphasis on the "heavy" in heavy psych, these sounds add a layer to the music that is spiritual. As in, yes we have more than killer music -- we have a concept album about life, death, and the ancient language of Peru. Things get very doom in Amaru with one of the best drum solos I've heard in a long time, and then more of those amazing effects. Let's keep it real -- this album is epic!

I asked the band for a little background on the album:
The album has a concept. It is a tribute to nature and to the Andes. Our Peruvian past. Our real gods, sun, moon, and Wiracocha (the giver of life). Amaru (the third track) is "snake" in Quechua, the real language of Peru before the arrival of Spanish. And it represents the dead world in our past religion, because death is a part of life.

SATÁNICOS MARIHUANOS is Guitar - Gabriel Carcelén, Bass - Andrés Silva, Drums - Renato Sauri with additional musicians Tania Duarte - Vocals, Alejandro Cornejo - Ambient Sound, Ursula Inga - Vocals, and Daniel López - Synths & Moogs.

Here is a video I clip I made for the pre-mix (without ambient and sound effects) of Inmerso en El Ande from my 420 comp on Bandcamp:

Temple of The Soul by The Insektlife Cycle instrumental psychedelic improv

Temple of The Soul by The Insektlife Cycle
Temple of The Soul by The Insektlife Cycle
I first heard the new album TEMPLE OF THE SOUL by THE INSEKTLIFE CYCLE in the middle of the night, so when I awoke in the morning after a few more hours of sleep, I had to wonder if it was a dream or if I had really listened to some of the very best instrumental psychedelic improvisation that I have ever heard? The answer is a flat-out YES and do not take only my word for how wonderful this collection of four tracks lasting nearly an hour are. The band was kind enough to share the album the The Swamp Krewe, and their response was immediate and unanimous: This is simply a fantastic album. Each song is unique, the improv stays true to each song without ever getting repetitive, and each instrument gets a chance to break out for its own little trip into outer space. I simply cannot recommend this album highly enough. Take a listen for yourself:

I asked The Insektlife Cycle if they would share a little about the album with us:
Temple of The Soul was recorded live on a 4 track cassette recorder. It’s a 2 and half hour jam resulting into a 4 track album
Since the album was recorded on tape, can you imagine how good the cassette edition is? And luckily there is a tape for sale:

Cassette tape edition of Temple of The Soul by The Insektlife Cycle

Also there is a vinyl and CD so check out the band's page on Bandcamp for all their merch.

The Death of All Religions by Hypnotic Nausea psych stoner concept album from Greece

The Death of All Religions by Hypnotic Nausea
The Death of All Religions by Hypnotic Nausea
Greece's HYPNOTIC NAUSEA drops their first album in a long time, and it's a really good psych rocker with great riffing and even some ambient going on. There are so many great samples on this one with a lot of variety, and they fit the music so nicely. And you still get very mellow and haunting vocals too, so this album is a real treat for fans of vocals. And guess what -- there's a message to all this. Yes, THE DEATH OF ALL RELIGIONS  is a concept album about:
A concept album about the viral nature of religion and other mind viruses. A made up deity drives society’s train and the people seem defenseless against it. They serve it blindly. Yet they serve other people. The inventors of their false god…

And check this out -- there is a COMIC BOOK included with the download! Here's a sample:
