Prog psych "Sage" by Wąż

"Instrumental psychedelic with a progressive edge" is how Fuzzy describes the debut album "Sage" by Poland's Wąż. A blend of stoner, prog metal, and ambient all tied together with a psychedelic sound. This is instrumental stoner music with a lot going on. Check out "Sage" by Wąż on Bandcamp:

The songs range from prog metal (the title track "Sage) to mellow ambient ("Solaris") and a blend of both ("Prism") yet the variety really works here. There is a flow and a cohesion to the songwriting that makes for an enjoyable trip across the various styles of music.

Fuzzy's favorite: "Prism" really gets its groove going with its 10-minute run, while "Sage" seems to capture the essence of Wąż's sound, and was a good choice for the title track. The entire album delivers a solid 47 minutes instrumental prog & psych.

Check out the CD and follow Wąż at https://wazband.bandcamp.com/album/sage

Prog metal PSYCLOPS drops debut album "Amalgam" on March 20

PSYCLOPS pre-release single Call Off The Haunt
PSYCLOPS pre-release single Call Off The Haunt
More killer music from PDX! This time around we have a new single (with the album dropping on March 20) from the Portland prog / groove metal band PSYCLOPS. The album is "Amalgam" and the pre-release single is "Call Off The Haunt" which you can hear below. The Portland quartet lays down a blend of progressive and groove metal with earnest vocals that get black at times.

I've listened to the full album "Amalgam" with it's 8 songs and 38 minutes of music. If you dig the pre-release single, you will dig Amalgam. It's strong throughout, and if I have to pick a few favorite tracks, I would say "An Arena?! They Have Time for Entertainment?!" and "Icarus Dies" highlight the band's many diverse talents.

"Amalgam" releases on March 20
"Amalgam" earns its name with elements of prog and groove metal, and clean and blackened vocals. It's high-energy all the way through with plenty of great guitar work.

Check out the lyric video for the pre-release single "Call Off The Haunt" on YouTube:

Psyclops is from Portland with the members:
  • Chris Jackson - Vocals, Guitar
  • Brandon Peterson - Bass
  • Guerd Alberts - Guitar
  • Alex Flatt - Drums

From the band:
PSYCLOPS is an eclectic group of rock and metal virtuoso’s armed with a bold, creative vision and a unique sound inspired by a diverse portfolio of artistic influences.
Follow Psyclops on Bandcamp to find out when "Amalgam" drops on March 20.

Lucius Fox new album "Quaternary Panorama" sticks & strings metal concept album

Lucius Fox new album "Quaternary Panorama"
Lucius Fox new album "Quaternary Panorama"
Fuzzy loves the sticks & strings setup (check out The Swamp's DOS BRUJOS and my Bandcamp comp "Sticks & Strings vol. 1") and Fuzzy loves instrumental (my next comp is 100% instrumental stoner), AND Fuzzy loves a good concept album (I produced CROW & POE), so when LUCIUS FOX sent me their new album "Quaternary Panorama" which is all of these things wrapped up into a mind-blowing instrumental prog metal guitar & drums concept album, what else was my reaction going to be except to say, this album is EPIC!! Have a listen to "Quaternary Panorama" and then I'll break it down:

Right off, this album is non-stop energy. The drums never let up, the riffs always keep it fresh, and even a slower song like "Extinction/Rebirth" is still full of more than enough metal. That's a hallmark of sticks & strings: each instrument has to pull way more than its own weight and it really pays off with this album.

Next thing, there is an incredible flow to this album. (Excuse the pun, since the concept that ties the songs together is glacier flows and timelines.) This plays out like a rock opera, with ebbs and flows and a consistency to the riffs that ties it all together without ever getting repetitive. This album rips it up for nearly an hour without missing a beat.

So technically, when an album is instrumental, you might argue that it's not a concept album since there are no lyrics to tell the story. Fuzzy disagrees with that. The music sets the mood and tells the story with sound, and if you insist on "lyrics" then read along with the copious album notes (and you might just learn something, too). Metal for nerds? Maybe, but I'm a nerd so I dig it. A lot.

Each song is tied to a geologic era focusing on the Great Lakes, from long ago until after humanity's demise. Check out the liner notes on the album page. From the band:
Quaternary Panorama is a 20,000 year timeline of the Great Lakes region; beginning during the final advance of the Laurentide ice sheet and ending just after the extinction of the human race. It spans the formation of the Great Lakes, migration of indigenous peoples to the region, colonialism, anthropogenic climate change, mass extinction and the aftermath. It’s hyper specific to the Great Lakes region and mega nerdy, but it also gets down really hard and we are incredibly proud of it.

Lucius Fox is from Kalamazoo, Michigan with members:
  • Jeremy Cronk - Guitar
  • Paul Joseph Drake Jr. - Drums

Prog stoner metal ORC S/T lays the pedal down with bass & drums

ORC S/T
ORC S/T cover art by Sly Me Illustration
All I really need to say about this debut album from ORC is how many times I've listened to it in the past 2 days since it was released. Over twenty times. It really is that good. Have a listen and then I'll break it down why I dig this album so much:

There is so much to like here, but in particular I have always dug a setup where the bass is the lead string instrument. (Check out my comp from last year Sticks & Strings vol. 1 for some more bass & string setups including Eats Batteries and Bardo.) It's pounding fuzz-ed out non-stop energy, and the drums have to work extra hard to make up for the low number of instruments.

Then there is the blend of progressive and stoner metal sounds. The band took it as their goal to mix these two genres together, and the result is way beyond anything you could hope for. The fuzz never stops, the heavy riffs never quit, and now you are getting an idea of why I've played this so many times in the past couple of days.

If this album was instrumental, I would still be raving about it. I would still have listened to it as many times as I did. (For example, check out last year's MOOZOONSII debut album with its instrumental stoner groove metal.)

But this album ain't instrumental. It has vocals, and does it ever! Andy Jeglic's singing piles onto the constant energy so well that it takes this album up to a new level. Andy's singing is the perfect match for this hard-driving music.

Orc says they were going for a mix of progressive and stoner metal, and Fuzzy says they found it!

I don't usually do the FFO thing but I will say this has me thinking fondly of the debut album from Montrose with its ultra fuzz, heavy riffs, and killer vocals. Yea I think it's OK to compare a band to Ronnie Montrose and Sammy Hagar without saying it's derivative in any way.

ORC prog stoner metal band from Lansing, Michigan

Orc is out of Lansing, Michigan with members:
  • Andy Jeglic - Bass / Vocals
  • Connor Peil - Drums
From the band:
Orc is a two-piece band from Lansing, MI, that was founded after members Andy and Connor attended a Primus and Mastodon concert. The goal of the project was to seamlessly weave progressive influences into a stoner-metal outfit.

Psych metal FARSEER's S/T album debut

I'm finally catching up on my reviews after the holidays, but I was listening to a lot of music and one album that got a lot of spins in The Swamp in December was the self-titled debut album from Chicago's FARSEER. This album sounds way beyond the typical debut effort and it delivers 47 minutes of a mostly instrument mix of progressive psych and sludge metal with two different singing styles added onto a few of the songs. I really dig this album. Take a listen:

I picked "Mouse Utopia" as one of Fuzzy's Fresh Picks on last month's show on Par9noid's Metal Underground so I guess that's my favorite song from the album. It's got a nonstop pounding rhythmn combined with guitars floating over the top, and vocals that kick in at just the right time. But it was not easy to pick a favorite from this album because it mitaintains a nearly perfect blend of progressive psych and sludge for the full 47 minutes.

The vocals do not dominate this album. Half the songs are instrumental, and when the vocals kick in they blend so seamlessly with the music it's like they are another instrument. That being said, I really dig the two styles of vocals. "Mouse Utopia" is full-bore gritty then when it gets to "Sleep in the Sound" we have a mix of those along with more angelic vocals.

Farseer is:

  • Brendan McCarthy: Guitar + Vocals
  • Ted Ballantine: Guitar
  • George Burrows: Bass
  • Kyle Curtis: Drums

From the band:
Blending post-metal and Floydian psychedelics with crushing riffs and consuming atmosphere, Farseer is a dynamic 4-piece progressive metal project from Chicago.

Influenced by / FFO:
Led Zeppelin, Modest Mouse, Baroness, Torche, Deafheaven, Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, Pink Floyd, Mastodon, Pelican, Russian Circles
Upcoming shows:

  • January 10 at Penny Road Pub in Barringon, IL with The Darkhorse Collective show info

DAHUZ doom psych debut EP hits you with a dash of prog

DAHUZ doom psych debut EP
DAHUZ doom psych debut EP
What's going on in France?? Just in the last week I have heard some mind-blowing doom psych. First it was Nydeaf, then Occult Hand Order, and today it is DAHUZ. Wow, this little 3-track partly instrumental debut EP is one of the most original set of songs I have heard in a while. Dahuz effortlessly weaves doom, psych, stoner, and even a dash of post or prog (depending on your interpretation) into a sound that is rewarding and captivating. It's hard not to really focus on these songs, which isn't to say you can't also just kick back and enjoy the heavy waves of sound as they wash over you. Check out DAHUZ:

Some other goodness: a few choice samples (I absolutely love samples), and the middle track is instrumental. I love the vocals on here (they have the perfect spaced-out sound for a doom psych album) but I won't deny how much I dig instrumentals. This EP delivers the best of all -- some of each. Right on!

From the band:
Gravelly echo of heavy bass lines, infuriated riffs and ethereal melodies drawing its inspiration from the most ancient fears and beliefs of humankind. Dahuz is a stoner/doom/prog band from the south of France.
Dahuz is from southern France and its members are:
Drums: Guillaume Spinetta
Bass guitar: Alexandre Culoma
Guitar, vocals: Emmanuel Cadman

Pantheon: Volume 3 by Caustic Casanova prog rock album review by Fuzzy Cracklins

Pantheon: Volume 3 by Caustic Casanova prog rock album review by Fuzzy Cracklins
Pantheon: Volume 3 by Caustic Casanova
Take a few parts heavy stoner metal and mix in a few parts prog and psych and you might end up with the unique sound of Caustic Casanova. Take a listen to Stampede from their most recent EP:

I really dig the high energy combined with the heavy riffs, but at the same time we get the lively guitar work and time changes from post metal or prog. Caustic Casanova has a very fresh and catchy sound while still keeping its roots in heavy metal.

And check out their cover of Weedeater's God Luck and Good Speed -- an epic 9 minute brain basher that doubles the time of the original:

Caustic Casanova is a trio from Washington, DC. consisting of Francis Beringer on bass & vox, Stefanie Zaenker on drums & vox, and Andrew Yonki on guitar.

And check out this news: Caustic Casanova will have a track on Magnetic Eye Records Best of Black Sabbath companion record, a bonus to the Vol.4 record. Available for pre-order now at MERHQ.net. Expect it to be out April 2020.

You can listen to Caustic Casanova's Stampede from Pantheon: Volume 3 along with many other fresh tracks from the heavy underground on this month's Bandcamp comp, Earth Day:

Zingaro instrumental prog metal fusion
Zingaro is a 2-piece experimental progressive desert rock band out of Denver, Colorado that blends progressive metal with funk, jazz, and even a little psychedelic guitar work. Take a listen:

I dig instrumental stoner music. I dig psychedelic improvisation and jams. So you know I dig this. These tracks keep the music fresh and more than interesting, and they do not get into repetitions.

Most of these songs are improvisations, and they are all recorded live. You can hear that live energy in the tracks.

Zingaro is Kade Hornbuckle on guitar and Quinn Warren on drums and percussion. Check them out on the Zingaro Bandcamp page.

Dr Sludgelove's My Space Odyssey
Does Fuzzy love a heavy song with a sample in it? Do gators bite? Hell, yes, I love a good sound clip. Here's my list of favorites. And here's Nydeaf's album review with one of the all-time great samples. And for "it's more of a sample than a song" you have to enjoy the electronic glory of doctea's Probe 7. So Fuzzy really has a treat for you today. Listen to the stream and read the full review of Dr Sludgelove's Space Odyssey fuzzy psychedelic album after the jump.......

From the warm shores of the Mediterranean Sea to the warm shores of the Gulf of Mexico ... we are all the same in our love of instrumental metal music, am I right? So when the guys in Nomera asked me to spin their latest album Holos you know I was keen to do so.
